Tarrazan in the post "Lesson 7: Drawing Vehicles"

Hi Uncomfortable.

This is not a submission of a drawing, but rather a question about how i should structure my drawings, now when i'm not doing lessons by them selves.

I want to try drawing stuff outside of drawabox, namely humans and landscapes, but i still want to do my drawabox drawings. But i don't really now how to proceed. I want to try drawing with other techniques etc. but i kind of feel "guilty" when i try other stuff, and with other techniques.

I'm not totally sure what i'm asking. But can you give my any advice in regards to incorporating stuff outside of drawabox?

Hi Uncomfortable. Here are some drawings i have done since last time. I don't really know where to post them tough, as they aren't focused on a single lesson. https://imgur.com/a/4pavYl4

That's amazing feedback :D Thank you so much!

Im definitely gonna submit some monthly drawings! Under what post should I do it? Or should I just create a separate post for it?

Also, I've exclusively done drawabox style drawing for the last 2-3 years I think it's been now, and I want to try and learn from other sources as well. I have wondered about trying to follow proko's lessons but I don't really now If that is the best approach. Could you recommend me anything?

Thanks! There has been a lot of stuff to do, but fortunately it hasn't been too hectic :P

Here are my five new drawings! https://imgur.com/a/cDsXAhL I have tried my best to follow your advice when drawing these and i hope it shows! And if doesn't i'll just try harder and draw some more :D

Here are my five drawings before and after details: https://imgur.com/a/eGZy99Q ! I used a black ballpoint ben, rulers and some ellipse templates i got from ebay preatty cheap! I did some hatching on one of the drawings because i simply forgot that i was supposed not to. To be honest this homework took me some time to go through, and i'm not at all satisfied with it, but with a 7 week old newborn and an undergraduate project on the way, i haven't had as much energy to focus on this as much as possible. I hope it's alright though

Here it is again! I feel like i have improved but i've had a big issue with withholding myself from going over the same lines more than once, i feel i have improved on that aswell, but it's something that's going to take some time for me to conquer completely.

Thanks for the answer, it makes it a lot easier to understand :D

Another question i have,if it's not too bothersome, is how would you have indicated the sand in the hourglass? I couldn't figure out a convincing way too do it myself.

Tarrazan in the post "Lesson 6: Drawing Everyday Objects"

2018-03-05 15:24

You're absolutely right, that is definatly something i should have been aware of, i felt like something was missing, how i didn't realise i forgot the minor axis is beyond me. I remember it when i practice my ellipses a couple of times a week, i'm almost ashamed that i could forgot doing it with all my "actual" drawings" wow.

I am without a doubt reversing back too basic mistakes way too often, and i don't really understand why i'm doing it to be honest. I have large gaps between my submission because i only send in the drawings i'm atleast somewhat satisfied with, i actually have been drawing literaly everyday since i started, and at least a couple of times a week, i do pages of boxes and cylinders, but only sparely do i do the other basic excercies, this is definatly something i'm going to change from now on, and make sure include all the basic excercices.

I have a question for you regarding my repeated marks and the hatching. Am i only supposed to draw every single line once, and never reinforce them or should i wait until i have finished the drawing and just add lineweight. I am a little bit confused about this part.

I'm going to stop with the hatching as you asked, but just out of curiosity, what would be a proper way to use it?

I want to thank you for taking your time to do this. I know it's probably at least somewhat frustrating for you too keep on critiquing more or less the same things every time i submit my homework, but i want you too know that i am appreciating what you do more than you can imagine, and i want to let you know that even though it might not seem like it always i am trying my best to do exactly what you say :D

Here it is again : https://imgur.com/a/nWLdV. I feel like i have understood it better this time around, but i feel like that most of the time. Has it improved or is it just more for the same? I have incorporated warm ups from lesson 1/2 and watched some of your videos

Tarrazan in the post "Lesson 5: Drawing Animals"

2017-11-22 22:56

Looking back at my homework for this lesson i can clearly see what you're talking about. And exactly as you point my bad habits take over and i forget everything once again, ( again.) I'ts so clear when you point it out, and to some extent it's even clear when i am drawing. The longer i spend on my homework the more it justs seems like i understand less and less of what i'm doing. It's actually kind of frustrating because i just wanna get better. And maybe that's why i'm not. Because - as you point out youself - i'm focusing too much on doing the homework than anything else.

I only have a certain amount of time available each day for drawing and i think that because of that instead of just drawing less and observing more, i'm trying too draw more to maximize my time, even though it's clearly counterproductive.

I do some lesson 1 and 2 material, but very sporadically - again because of time constraints, i look through the lessons a couple of times while doing the homework, but i'm neglecting the videos. As you say it feels like i'm just running in circles and forgetting more and more, and while i feel that's the case i'm just extremely confused about how to fix it. Anyways, that's just my ramblings. I will watch your videos and do some lesson 1/ lesson 2 warm ups, and try again..again...again :p

Unfortunately i couldn't find a proper way to to the overdrawings, because i don't have any pictures of animals or access to a printer near me. How important do you feel they are? Because then i could probably buy an illustrated book or something? :D

Tarrazan in the post "Lesson 5: Drawing Animals"

2017-10-29 00:33

https://imgur.com/a/1wPVS Here it is. I feel very conflicted with these. I spent a lot of time on them, and instead of just drawing animal after animal i tried to understand each animal before i moved to the next, yet i still think most of these drawing are lacking a lot. The eyes are the thing i struggle the most with, i just can't seem to get it right or understand exactly what i'm doing wrong. Anyways i'm stille proud of :D

Tarrazan in the post "Lesson 4: Drawing Insects and Arachnids"

2017-09-17 23:33

You don't know how amazing that is to hear! I think that this is the first time in a year i've actually drawn good enough to continue straight too the next lesson!! :D

I can definately see what you mean with the underdrawings. i think the reason i'm doing them is that i want to draw exactly what i see instead of 'just trying too draw what i see' and working with the lines i actually draw. Like you say i am trying to correct mistakes instead of accepting them and moving forward.

I guess my question is, how much should i strive too draw exactly what i see and how much should i just draw my understanding of what i see if that makes sense? That is probably the most confusing part of all of this for me. I don't know how much "artistic license/ going with my mistakes" i have?

I am very grateful that you are doing all this work! :D

I'm not rushing or anything it just feels like i don't 'see'.

Here are the extra four drawings you asked for : http://imgur.com/a/tPdn1 . I tried focusing on line weight especially, and i think i at least did a better job than last time. I did'nt get it right at all with the flower, but i hope i still improved overall

Tarrazan in the post "Lesson 3: Drawing Plants"

2017-08-21 20:18

I will do that, thank you very much for taking the time :D However i'm a bit confused about the linework, i can see that it looks stiff, but i don't seem to be able too "see" what makes it stiff, if that makes any sense. I've reread your lesson and notes a couple of times and looked at your drawings but it seems like i'm missing something.

I enjoy "redoing" my homework if that because i really feel like i'm learning a lot from it. The first i did your lessons ( before you restarted me at lesson 1) i think i might have put unnecessary pressure on myself and rushed it, now i try to take as much time as possible and just do what it takes, even if that means doing double the minimum drawings to turn in something i'm satisfied with. That was a sidetrack however, see you when i've done my four plants again :D

I definatly notice the difference when drawing lines without thinking too much about it. I Will practice this in the 250 cylinder challenge.

I will however say that im not purposfully ignoring your advice about drawing smaller cylinders, i honestly thougt that i was indeed drawing smaller cylinders. Anyways see you in the next critique.

I have tried to do what you asked for, focusing on drawing confidently, applying the ghosting method and not adding any line weight. I have ghosted every shape - even though when looking at some of them, they look way too wobly - and i have tried to be as confident with every line as possible - again i still feel some of them have come out too wobly.

I honestly spend a good amount of time with this lesson, and i didn't stop drawing until i was satisfied with the required homework. I've done a good deal of other pages - that i haven't included, simply because i wasn't satisfied with the work, and instead of just sending it in, i redrew and redrew until i had done the required work in a manner i was satisfied with. That being said, i still don't think it's perfect, and i still think some drawings here and there could be done better, but overall i feel pretty satisfied with my work this time around.

I gotta admit though, that it feels really defeating for me and like i'm not progressing at all. I know that it's part of the proces, but it's still hard. I'll muster through anyway though, i'm going to finish these lessons wheater it takes me 6 months og 6 years.

http://imgur.com/a/gQz05

I've followed your advice and the lessons on drawabox closely for this one, like you told me to do, and i feel like it's definitely visible. I've really tried wrapping my lines around the form and not just plotting them where i saw them fit. I now there's still a big difference between the good drawings and the bad drawings, both in proportions and just the overall drawing. But for everyday i draw i certainly feel like i'm getting better.

I haven't really gotten any good ideas, not anyone that are better that your own at least.

I just want to take the time to say how grateful i am for the time you're taking providing the work you do. I've been drawing everyday since the end of 2013, and i have seen way more progress during the last year i've been doing drawabox, than the other years combined.

While i'm already a patron supporter, i would have absolutly no problem at all increasing the amount i pay, as i think your clearly deserve it with all the time your'e investing.

I tried to focus a lot more on using the ghost method, and while i sometimes slipped because i just didn't focus on it, i feel like it's gotten a lot more natural for me to do.

I don't know if there is a big difference from the first cyllinders to the last, but i feel a lot more secure in drawing them now.

Tarrazan in the post "250 Box Challenge"

2016-07-25 23:18

You asked me to do the 250 box and cyllinder challenges before i progressed to lesson 11 so here is the boxes : http://imgur.com/a/ZYqPh

I feel like i started to get it around box 150 or so. There is still a lot of room to improve of course, but i'm feeling much more comfortable around boxes, it took a long time to do, because i couldn't do much more than 20-30 boxes at a time before i became wildly unfocused and highly self-critical. I hope this is good enough. I certainly feel some improvement myself. :D

I really liked this lesson. It was a lot more complicated than the others, which just made me focus a lot more on the task.

I am in no way satisfied with these drawings, as it is clear to me that i'm lacking on a lot of areas. I did however use the ghosting technique a lot more.

I also watched your videos about cyllinders, that you recommended me too. Unfortunatley i don't think it had enough of an impact on me.

Overall i think that, even if these aren't my best drawings, and i might not be seeing it that clearly in my drawings, i'm starting to feel like i'm progressing.

The post for Lesson 7 is archived , so i'll just comment on here instead.

Looking back at the work i'm definitely seeing what you're getting at. Especially point 3, which i almost completely forgot doing. Same goes with the ghosting thing. I honestly thought i was using this technique a lot, but in reality i was propaply only drawing and tracing over the same line, with no prior movements with the pen Over the paper, if that makes sense.

I have started focusing on these things, but i seem to be having a lot of problems with lesson 7. The lesson is in itself very intimidating for me, because of the size of the objects i'm drawing, but i have felt that way for the last two lessons as well, and after a couple of drawings the intimidation was gone. This lesson however is something else.

I am just having a hard type understanding what to do and how to proceed, even though i have watched you patreon videos, i can't really seem to pinpoint what's confusing me.

I thought this lesson was the most entertaining, and enlightning yet.

More than the animal and plant drawings, i felt how the basic shapes we learned in the first lesson, forms the object arounds us. This developed a certain way of looking at things. I no longer see just a lamp, when i look at my desk, but a couple of connected, geometrical forms.

However, i have definitely got a long way to go still. As you have mentioned, almost every time since my first lesson, i tend to draw to many lines, and the lines i draw aren't straight enough. During this lesson i have become more aware of this, as it really forces you to think about the lines. It's a lot easier to get a way with a badly curven line ( like in the back of a feline) than it is to get away with af jagged or warped, straight line. ( Like in a washing machine or a computer.)

I read and re-read your demos, and to be honest i was a little confused the first time ( As you might see on the first 2-3 drawings) However after i reread, and spend some more time on the demos i started to understand it somewhat better, and i think this can be seen especially in the drawing of the rat and the drawing of the Hippo.

the Drawings aren't that good, which i primarily think is because i'm getting tired of insects. But i think i have begun to understand the contour lines better. I Have knowinlgy choosen to draw from pictures that was at an angle, so it would be easier for me to understand the natural segmentation

2015-06-24 20:07

I have watched the wasp-drawing on patreon, and re-read ( and re-drawn) but i still can't seem too comprehend what i'm doing wrong, other than maybe i'm doing a lot more contour lines than you are. I'm a little confused, but i'll try and draw 3 more outlines and only drawing contour lines where i can see clear segmentation.
