Thank you very much for the review and advices! I will keep them in mind for the next challenge. Good luck dealing with all the submissions!

Hi there. Well done on completing this lesson and the 250 boxes challenge. Here is my feedback:

    • The lines on the ghosted line exercise and the ghosted planes exercise look pretty good.

    • Maybe you are sometimes too "careful" with the ellipses? Especially with the bigger ones it seems your hand was sometimes not confident and that results in ellipses that look a bit "unnatural" I don't really know how to describe it better.

    • Your lines do not look so good in the first pages of the final exercise. There are some "chicken scratching" where you partially or entirely go over the line again and it result in two different lines more than a single line that has been strengthen. I saw your 250 boxes challenge and that is not completely fixed. The pen are probably not helping so you could maybe try again when you get something else to work with?

    • I saw the review by user Rajivfonia on your 250 boxes challenge and they give you good advice. One of the thing that will be challenging for you will probably be the "line weight". Even if you only have a ballpoint pen at the moment, you should practice varying line weight. For example by doing some more of the superimposed lines exercise.

I hope that was clear. Good luck!

    Next Steps:

I agree with user Rajivfonia and I would add : practice varying line weight if you can

Thank you very much for those advice!

For example on the rough perspective exercise. On the second page (by order of scrolling on your imgur page), the line at the extreme bottom left is making a small wave like a "~".

On the second page of the organic perspective exercise, the line at the bottom left is wavy ~~ and does not seem to de draw with a confident hand.

One example of "curvy line" is with the ghosted lines exercise, the one the most on the right (vertical) has a very slight curve to the right. I think you mostly have corrected this with the following exercise though, so you should not have too much troubles with it.

Those examples of "bad" lines are mostly me cherry picking by the way. Most of the line are fine and you should not have any problem after the 250 boxes challenge if you do it carefully :)

    Hello again :P

I realized that my advice "not to go over your lines again and again" might be misleading. With the 250 boxes challenge, you are "allowed" to add line weight

    From the challenge page :

One technique that is extremely useful both in reinforcing the illusion of solidity in our forms and in helping to organize our linework and clarify how different forms overlap is the use of line weight. Basically, it means making certain lines thicker than others (by going back over them with a confident, planned stroke).

So I guess if you want to try go for it ! The practice should help if the first tries are not so good :)

That's it, I'm not bothering you any longer. Good luck !

    Hello!

I am indeed a $5 patreon. I would actually rather like an official critique, but I did not think about it too much when submitting the homework (I thought only patreon supporters were allowed to post homework).

I can not see how to edit or delete my homework submission. Do I simply make an other one ?

Thank you for your time and sorry for the inconvenience.

I'll take it from here then :)

Your ellipses look pretty good to me. You have not drawn the ellipses in the funnel exercise with a wider degree but that was optional anyway.

We can see you are carefully using the ghosting lines method. That's good and your lines look confident most of the time. But the starting and ending points of the lines are drawn too heavily, you should try to make them less noticeable in future exercises.

Your perspective is not too bad but I strongly suggest you to tackle the 250 boxes challenge to improve it.

    Good work !

    Next Steps:

I think you should at least try to tackle the 250 boxes challenges before moving on to lesson 2.

    Hello :)

I think practice is key with most of the problems you have noticed. It is obvious you have done the exercises with care and accuracy. I would not worry too much.

With the fear of overshooting the lines and making them either too long or too short, my personal opinion is that it is better to draw with a confident hand, even if you sacrifice accuracy, and try to fix the accuracy thing on the way. It seems to be working for me anyway.

    What I think :

    • You've done the best you could with the lines exercises and they look pretty good to me

    • Do not let yourself get careless with the straight lines though. Some are curvy on the rough perspective exercise but since they are fixed with the organic perspective you should be ok

    • I've seen worst perspective but it can be improved

    Good job !

    Next Steps:

I suggest you tackle the 250 boxes challenge to improve your perspective befor moving on with lesson 2.

The thing you should be careful about in the future is the straight lines that are a bit curvy sometimes or not always drawn with a confident hand. They are ok most of the time though so do not worry to much about that. They look pretty good in the ghosted planes exercises. If you struggle with them in the future, maybe you could draw some ghosted planes as a warm up to help you with that?

You're not quite there yet with the perspective so I would recommend you to tackle the 250 boxes challenge to get that out of the way.

    Well done !

You're good to tackle the 250 challenge as it's probably a good exercise for practicing your lines as well. We can already see you getting better with those exercise so that should not be a problem with some practice.

One word on the ellipses : If you feel like working on those again maybe you could try aiming less for accuracy and more for a confident stroke, they feel a bit too "careful" :)

Good luck with the 250 boxes !

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
