Hey there! Congrats on finishing lesson 1.

    Lines

Your superimposed lines overall look great, there's a couple which are a little wobbly--always remember, confidence over accuracy. Same critique for your ghosted lines.

    Ellipses

Impressed with your confident lines in your ellipses homework! It looks like you're drawing through your ellipses a couple times too many (only do it two or three times) with the ellipses in planes, but otherwise, great work.

    Boxes

For your rough perspective boxes, you should be extending those lines only to the horizon line so you can see how far you are from the vanishing point--not sure why it looks like you've extended some of those lines past the horizon line. I don't think it's a big deal, it just makes it harder to look at the work since it makes it messier. Your other box homework looks great though!

    Overall, nicely done.

Hey there! Congrats on finishing lesson 1.

    Lines

Your superimposed lines are looking a little wobbly, especially the curved ones. Remember--confidence over accuracy. Make bold, confident strokes using your shoulder pivot. However, they don't appear to be fraying at both ends, which is great! Ghosted lines also appear a little wobbly but mostly fine. There's also a little arching at the beginning/end, which again can be corrected with the shoulder pivot if you aren't already doing so. If you are, don't worry about it.

    Ellipses

Your ellipses are a little messy but there's considerable improvement from the first ellipses exercise to the funnels, so good job! You appear to have only drawn through the ellipses 1.5ish times in the beginning but have corrected that in the later lessons.

    Boxes

Good variation with your rough perspective boxes--looks like you were experimenting a lot with different sizes and lengths, which is great! You appear to be overshooting your ghosted lines a bit, but that will improve over time. Most of the issues you have with your boxes homework can be fixed by practicing ghosted lines before you do the boxes.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge and be confident in your lines!

Hey there! Congrats on finishing lesson 1.

    Lines

Your superimposed lines look great! Very confident strokes and only fraying at the end, which is what you want to see with lesson 1. The ghosted lines are overall pretty good as well–one tiny thing is that some of your lines appear a little wobbly/curved at the beginning or end, which may be because you're using your wrist instead of your shoulder pivot. If that's the case, remember to use your shoulder. If it's just a fluke, don't worry about it.

    Ellipses

Your ellipses look really great! Strong, confident strokes. The only note I have is that the minor axis does not cut symmetrically for a couple of them, but it's not a big deal at all.

    Boxes

Your box lines on rough perspective are a little wobbly--warming up with ghosting/superimposed lines will help make those lines more confident. Remember, confidence over accuracy right now. Organic perspective boxes are great and so are your rotated boxes.

Overall, very good work! I'm happy to mark this as complete.

Hey there! Congrats on finishing the first lesson :)

    Lines

Both your superimposed lines and your ghosted lines look great! Confident strokes, which is perfect. One small thing I might note is that it's pretty clear you're applying pressure at the beginning and then pulling your hand off the page with the ghosted lines since your line weight is super light at the end and dark at the beginning--Not a big deal right now, but try to keep your line weight/pressure application consistent.

    Ellipses

These look great too! Maybe try some more distorted/dramatic ellipses the next time you use ellipses as a warmup.

    Boxes

Most of your rough perspective boxes are very similarly drawn. If you do this again, I would try some different types of boxes to really get a feel for the perspective. Same goes for your organic perspective boxes (and if you're drawing over your lines to add line weight, I would really only do it once--otherwise you get a sketchy quality and the boxes don't look as confident). Your rotated boxes look really great!

Overall, your work is very solid, and I think it's time for you to tackle the 250 box challenge. Good job!

    Hi Starpixo!

    Lines

Your straight superimposed lines look great! They're very confident and are only fraying at the end, which is what you want at lesson 1. The curved lines are a little less precise with the starting point, so be careful with those. Some of your ghosted lines do appear to be arching a bit--which can be the result of using your wrist instead of the shoulder pivot, so make sure you're using your shoulder. If you are sure you're using your shoulder, try correcting it by thinking about arching in the opposite direction. However, your ghosted lines otherwise look great! Very confident lines.

    Ellipses

Your ellipses look great, the only comment I have is the minor axis sometimes doesn't cut symmetrically. Some of your ellipses also look like they aren't drawn through 2-3 times, only 1.5ish times--make sure you're drawing through them completely.

    Boxes

For your rough perspective boxes, you should be following the rough lines you made to the horizon line, not to the actual vanishing point that doesn't reflect your actual lines. This is so you can see your mistakes and how far away you were from the actual vanishing point. You also appear to have drawn over your lines a couple of times--you should only be drawing the line once. However, your organic boxes look great!

    Next Steps:

Redo your rough perspective boxes so the lines are plotted back to the horizon line, not the vanishing point. Read more about it in the homework assignment: https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/roughperspective

Thank you so much Brianna! The boxes I made after ~box 50 started to become more dramatic because I got a critique in the discord that I wasn't making enough boxes with dramatic foreshortening, and I think I overcompensated. I will definitely focus on boxes with shallow foreshortening to correct my overcompensation for warmups, thanks again for the detailed critique!

Hi Ninguem! Thank you so much for your detailed critiques. Apologies for taking months to reply, I'm online to upload my 250 box challenge and this is the first time I've opened my Draw A Box account in a while (I've been relying on Discord for critiques).

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
