    Hi Ji,

I'll be doing a review of your homework today.

    Lines look confident and smooth.

Ellipses are looking good as well.

I would say all your exercises were very well done.

I think the Organic Perspective and Rotating Boxes were done well, considering this is your lesson 1 exercises.

A few points to keep in mind:

    1. Always ghost your lines. This will be more and more important going into the next challenge.

    2. Remember to draw from your shoulder and loosen up to allow for straight, confident lines. It looks like you're doing a good job of this already.

    Great work!

    Next Steps:

    250 Box Challenge!

I would agree that the Rough Perspective exercise had a few boxes that were quite off. Another page would be helpful to reinforce the concept.

    Hello Jen,

I'll be reviewing your work today.

    Lines:

    1. Good confidence, I do not see fraying on both ends of the lines.

    2. For the ghosted lines, you have a bit of an arch. Watch out for that and remember to draw from your shoulder. Make sure your shoulder is loosened up as well, I find that that helps the fluidity of the motion.

    Ellipses:

    1. Ghosted Planes and Ellipses look well done. I see that you've drawn through your ellipses 2-3 times.

    2. The funnel exercise: remember to expand the angle of your ellipses as you extend further away from the center. Some of the funnels look like they have the exact same ellipses all the way through.

    Boxes:

    1. Looks good. Some lines for the inner part of the box in the rough perspective exercise could be straighter. Don't forget to ghost through all your lines. Every line is important!

    2. Rotated boxes look nice. Great work!

    250 box challenge!

    Hi lemons_and_roses,

    Thanks again for your feedback.

Congratulations on finishing the challenge. Here are a few things that I noticed:

    1. your line work definitely improves as the exercise goes on. The first few pages had much more noticeable wobbling.

    2. I think I saw one incorrect extension of lines (in the wrong direction), but otherwise, all the other pages I saw looked good on that front.

    3. Your line convergences look very well done and you don't have an issue with parallel lines.

    4. For the hatching lines, if you are going to do them, I would recommend doing them with the utmost attention. It's easy to do incorrectly and make your box look sloppy. Remember to ghost through hatching lines as well, and to be consistent with the length. Sometimes your hatched lines touch the lines of the box, and sometimes they do not.

    5. Line weight is subtle and I am able to tell the front face; no concerns there.

    6. Good variety of box types, no real obvious duplication of orientation.

    7. Inner corner looks really good by the end of the exercise. Great work!

    Hi BIGSILLYPUPPY,

I took a look over your submission and I see a lot of good things:

    1. Great job with the lines. I do not see a lot of wobble which means you are drawing confidently! Keep in mind that confidence > accuracy at this stage.

    2. No repeating of lines either, that is good.

    3. The ellipses are well done, and only drawn through 1-2 times.

    A piece of feedback:

    1. For the rotated boxes, many of the boxes on the fringe stop rotating. It is a challenging exercise though, so good work regardless.

    Next Steps:

    250 box challenge, I believe!

    Hello!

Good work so far. A few comments below:

    1. For the ellipses in the funnels, remember to grow the ellipses bigger as they go further away from the middle point. Some of the ellipses look the same size.

    2. For the rough perspective exercise, remember to draw confidently and ghost your lines after setting your vertices.

    3. The organic boxes exercise look pretty nice!

    Hello!

Overall, looks like good progress. A few comments below:

    1. The funnel of ellipses should have the ellipses grow bigger as they go further away from the symmetrical middle.

    2. For the organic perspective, remember to continue to ghost your lines and to draw confidently.

    Hello!

    1. Ellipses table, reminder to remove spacing between the ellipses. Keep them tight so you can use them for reference.

    Great start, otherwise!

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
