hello again! your funnel exercise this time is nice! more warm-ups like this in the future and it will get better. just be mindful that all minor axis must be aligned. additionally, when you already got the gist of aligning them, increasing the degrees of ellipses as they move further from the center will be also be a helpful exercise.

as for the 250 boxes, i think it's okay to submit it already if you are done with :)

Hi Endolphin! Congrats for finishing lesson 1!

I am not an expert yet but allow me to relay what I have learned when I was doing the lesson and from the critique I received.

    LINES

Compared with the first lines on superimposed exercise, your lines started to follow the same trajectory as you move to the second page, nice job on that. But then, they also started fraying on the starting point. Confidence is good but it must be coupled with enough preparation to achieve more desirable result. Take your time to place the pen on the correct starting point like how you started in the first page. For ghosted lines, the ghosting method is a must to avoid overshooting or missing the points. Your ghosted planes looks good.

    ELLIPSES

All throughout ellipses exercises, most ellipses are drawn through over the required times of 2-3. We are asked to draw through ellipses to have smoother and cleaner output but going over the required times result in messy ellipses. In the ellipses in planes, there is visible effort to have the ellipses touch the edges of the planes and there are successful attempts. Some of the grids in the table have snugly fitted ellipses while most are loosely drawn on the grids. The ellipses in funnels are again, too loose. Almost all of the funnels are. Having them loosely drawn like that defeats the purpose of the exercise which is to enable us to assess if we succeeded in creating ellipses based on our set criteria. Criteria of which is to fit the ellipses in the space set for them. But since you are just loosely drawing them, there is no criteria to assess the success of it. (I hope I was able to explain it clearly...,, if not tell me in the reply on in discord of same username.)

    BOXES

Good job on the plotted perspective. As for the shading of planes, it would be helpful if it would also be done freehand as it contributes to your line exercises mileage. In rough perspective, most of the line are being repeatedly drawn through. We asked not to repeat our lines in case of mistakes but to leave them as they are and take it as another learning to be very careful next time. Additionally, in order to be able to draw confident lines that do not need drawing over, is to constantly apply the ghosting method. This is so you can plot points accurately as you plan where to put your lines. The rotated boxes is commonly a tough cookie for most of us. In the future, after finishing 250 boxes and you revisit the rotated boxes exercises, I would suggest to draw them larger than your first exercise. This is so you can plan the other boxes more thoroughly which will then enable you to visualize more how they must rotate in their respective spaces. Lastly, I noticed some improvements from page 1 of organic perspective to the second page. 250 boxes will greatly improve your ability on visualizing how boxes rotate in space and how to draw them properly.

But before moving on to the challenge, I will suggest to repeat the funnel exercise first. It is very important that you learn how to fit ellipses in the funnel snugly all the while keeping their minor axis in line. And also keep in mind to draw through the ellipses only 2-3 times. Good luck!

Hi Magicalfox! Congrats for finishing lesson 1!

I am not an expert yet but allow me to relay what I have learned when I was doing the lesson and from the critique I received.

    LINES

Your superimposed lines are neat!!! Good job for trusting muscle memory and not restricting the movement of your hands. For your ghosted lines, the confidence from before somehow wavered a bit as there are changes in trajectory of your lines midway which resulted to arching lines. Along with the overshooting in ghosted planes, these will be improved later on as we move further in the lessons.

    ELLIPSES

There are grids with a lot of spaces where ellipses can still fill in as well as grids with ellipses not snugly fit with each other. I suggest to note this when you do these exercises as warm-ups for future lessons. I can see the effort to have the ellipses touch all edges of the planes and while not all came out successfully, there's nothing to worry in there. More exercises and you will get better. The funnels look great, too. For the whole ellipses exercises, though, a lot of ellipses are drawn through more than the suggested 2-3 times. This resulted in somewhat messy ellipses. Please try to minimize drawing through the ellipses for your warm-ups.

    BOXES

You did a great job on plotted and rough perspective, too. There are some lines that are considerably far from vanishing points but mostly were nearing perfection. in the rotated boxes, you succeeded in keeping corners of boxes together. Though somehow the boxes in the center are kind of just converging in the same vanishing point instead of rotating. There are some boxes whose "Y" are not greater than 90 degrees in the organic perspective but I can see that you are starting to grasp how boxes should be drawn. Lastly, you leaned more on prioritizing accuracy over confidence because your lines started to get wobbly. It must be noted that all lines being drawn, line exercises or not, must always be done with confidence. So even though we are already way past lines exercises, the ghosting method is still needed to be practiced. This method will help you draw the planes of the boxes more accurately and therefore lessen the repetition of lines. It was mentioned in the lessons that once we have drawn the lines, we have to accept its outcome. If turned out accurate, good. If not accurate, we move on and take that as a learning to be more careful in our next lines. In short, no drawing over lines that were already drawn :)

I think you are ready for the 250 boxes challenges. Enjoy and keep going!

    Good luck!

Hi Schnelephant! Congrats for finishing lesson 1!

I am not an expert yet but allow me to relay what I have learned when I was doing the lesson and from the critique I received.

    LINES

You did a great job on the superimposed lines--- there are almost no fraying on the starting points! As for the ghosted planes, some lines overshoots and some do not meet to form the corner of the plane. A reminder that to always practice the ghosting method to improve accuracy.

    ELLIPSES

There are noticeable deformed ellipses in your exercises, especially in the ellipses in planes, This is due to being hesitant and not confident with what you are doing. Always try to ghost through the ellipses first in order to "prepare" your muscles and brain in the next step you are going to take. It's good that you made the attempt for the ellipses to touch all the sides of the planes but that caused your ellipses to be deformed. I hope you take note of this and make sure also to fit your ellipses snugly in the grids when you will perform these exercises as warm-ups in the future lessons.

    BOXES

I noticed you had difficulty in estimating where to place the lines that will make up the "back" of the boxes. It is helpful to repeatedly ghost back your lines to the vanishing point until you find an accurate angle before actually drawing them. The rotated boxes is really a hard exercises and it is a common obstacle. They said this will be more clearer after going through the 250 boxes, which in my case was true. For the rotating boxes, it is hard to estimate where the vanishing points are. It's as if the lines, individually, have their own vanishing points. I suggest to follow the tip which is to always start with "Y" having all angles of greater than 90 degrees. Repeating this exercise after going through the lesson on this again will give you more clearer understanding of this.

    Good luck!

Hi Jeff! Congrats for finishing lesson 1!

I am not an expert yet but allow me to relay what I have learned when I was doing the lesson and from the critique I received.

    LINES

You did a great job at trusting muscle memory and not restricting your movement to achieve straight lines. I noticed that here are still fraying lines on the starting points, always make sure that your pen is placed right before striking lines. For ghosting lines, not all lines have starting and ending points. It is important that these must be placed first in order to practice your accuracy.

    ELLIPSES

The most noticeable point in your exercises on this part was that your ellipses did not came off as neat and smooth even after drawing through them. As a reminder, the ghosting method of drawing ellipses is a great practice to fix this. There are grids on the tables with loose ellipses and there are ellipses that do not touch all edges in the planes. Having these exercises as warm-ups for the following lessons will help a lot. I think your funnel exercises is quite right.

    BOXES

Great job on the plotted perspective. Seeing that you pointed out your mistake in the rotating boxes, I think you have at least grasped the idea of it. One thing though that you missed is keeping the corners of the boxes near each other to assist the formation of the neighboring boxes. To answer your question on the organic perspective, I think it must be because one of the corners of the "Y" is not greater than 90 degrees. I could tell that you've improved on the second page, though. As for the rough perspective I could not tell if your lines are accurate or near accurate as you did not trace all the lines to the vanishing point. All lines of the plane must be traced back to the vanishing point to assess if your estimation was hit or miss.

I'd suggest to repeat the 2 pages of rough perspective with all necessary lines traced back to the vanishing point.

    Good luck!

Hi Joshu123! Congrats for finishing lesson 1!

I am not an expert yet but allow me to relay what I have learned when I was doing the lesson and from the critique I received.

    LINES

There are rarely wobbly lines in your lines exercises and I can tell that such were done with confidence. I would like to point out that there are quite some fraying on the starting points of your lines. I also noticed that there are overshooting of lines in the ghosting exercise. I'd to suggest to always follow the ghosting method. Both of these can be fixed through having these exercises as warm-ups for your future lessons, so no worries on that part. In the ghosted planes, there are instances that starting and ending dots weren't in place before drawing the lines, make sure to also correct it in practices.

    ELLIPSES

You did great on doing the ellipses exercise--- from making sure ellipses are drawn through and fitting the ellipses snugly in the tables. The ellipses in the funnels, though, aren't aligned vertically and has different angles. I can also see that your circles in the planes improved in the second page. It was only optional, but it would be beneficial to try varying the degrees of ellipses, making them more circular as they move away from the center. This helped me a lot in the lessons that followed. \

    BOXES

Your plotted perspective page looked neat and just right. As for the rough perspective, I could not quite make out what was going on, must be the plotted lines being more noticeable than the boxes themselves and the lines themselves aren't extended all the way to the horizon line. The rotated boxes was not perfect, as such is true to most beginners, but you did well in trying the exercise. A tip in the lesson was to always make sure that the corners are close to each other in order to make the estimation of the neighboring boxes easier. Most of the boxes in the organic perspective do not match with their respective vanishing points. I'd suggest to practice what was mentioned in the lessons to plan your lines well and not to rush things. :)

All in all, you did a good job in lesson 1!

    Stay safe and enjoy learning!

    Next Steps:

The imperfections were all common and all can be fixed through practice so good luck on moving on to the 250 boxes! It will be tough but all worth it.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
