Looking good man! I could see your ellipses getting smoother and smoother on the exercises, especially on the bottom right box on the tables exercise. It'll get better overtime after you put them as your warmups. Continue on to the 250 boxes challenge.

Also sorry for the late reply, life haven't been the best hugger.

Heyo! Thank you so much for taking your time to critique my assignment!

Yeah when I did the organic forms exercise I was not paying close attention and thought that that was how you do it, turns out I was wrong. Here is the revision you wanted.

I definitely think I can be better at doing these so if you think i should do another one, it's no biggie.

Heyo Persefone ! Great job for completing lesson 1 !

I'll be critiquing your homework, still new to the critiquing thingy but hopefully I can help you even if for a little bit !

    Lines

    • In superimposed lines, there are fraying on both ends. Take your time on lining up your pen before drawing a mark.

    ++ Good, confident lines.

+++ Really nice lines in ghosted planes exercise!

    Ellipses

    ++ Nice confident ellipses throughout!

++ Ellipses are all drawn through 2 to 3 times, small but nice.

++ For funnels exercise, the center line is nicely parallel to the ellipses' minor axes

    Boxes

++ Rotated boxes are rotated nicely!

    • Some lines are bit wobbly in the rough perspective exercise. Though, looking on your organic perspective exercise, seems like you noticed that and aimed for confidence over accuracy, great job on that!

++ Great job on the outlines!

-- Some boxes in rotated boxes exercise doesn't actually rotate. They seem to converge in to the same vanishing point. It might help you to think of the vanishing point getting closer to the box the more it's rotated.

Overall, your confident and smooth lines and ellipses show you to have the key line and ellipses practices down.

I'm marking this complete. You can continue to the 250 boxes challenge. Good luck on your future endeavors !

Heya Heti! Congrats on completing lesson 1!

    Line :

-- Lines are wobbly. Having a smooth and confident markmaking is our first priority, accuracy will come later. Some look smooth though so perhaps you weren't ghosting them enough.

++ Planning your lines by marking a dot.

    Ellipses :

-- Some ellipses are only drawn through once. 2 to 3 times is the acceptable amount. Though I notice that most of them are drawn through 3 times, please be consistent in drawing them.

-- Overlapping ellipses in tables of ellipses. Plan your ellipses better by visualizing them first.

-- In tables of ellipses, the minor axis for each ellipses are different in each square. Reminder to have a clear minor axis for each square to give a better understanding of what you're lacking.

    • Ellipses are deformed to try and fit the boundaries. Prioritize smoothness and confidence over accuracy.

? In funnels exercise, the middle line does not cut the ellipses in 2 symmetrical halves. Measure the distance between your arches before drawing the middle line.

    Boxes :

++ Correction lines are drawn with a different coloured pen.

++ On rough perspective, I can see you keeping the horizontal line parallel to the horizon and the vertical line perpendicular to it. Good stuff.

++ Rotated boxes are rotated nicely !

-- Rotated boxes should not have repeating lines.

-- Organic perspective should not have repeating lines.

++ Commiting to a line without drawing over them.

? Perhaps it would help you to draw hatching lines in the rotated boxes exercise to better see which side is which.

-- Rotated boxes should have their corner very close to each other. Yours seem to expand out, possibly to see them better, but that wasn't part of the exercise.

++ In organic perspective, boxes get smaller further out. Nice.

Overall, you seem to misunderstand or skipped a couple of important tidbits in the exercise page. Please give them a re-read a couple of times before and while doing the exercises. I want you to re-do 1 page each for the ghosted planes, elllipses in planes, and the tables of ellipses exercises. Remember to focus on getting a confident and straight line / ellipses, accuracy comes later.

    Next Steps:

Re-do 1 page each for the ghosted planes, ellipses in planes, and tables of ellipses exercises.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Heya Lempyrionx! Good job on completing lesson 1!

    Lines :

    • Little bit of fraying on the starting point. Do take the time to line up your pen before making a mark.

-- In the lines assignment, I see that your lines are a bit wobbly. Remember that we should focus on getting a confident line before an accurate one. Though some in ghosted planes are confident so I think it's a matter of rushing abit. Take your time.

    Ellipses :

+++ Ellipses are all drawn through 2 to 3 times. Nicee.

-- Wobbly ellipses. Same with the lines, we focus on getting a confident ellipse that maintain its flow before having them fit nicely within our boundaries.

++ For funnels, center line is nicely parallel to the ellipses minor axis.

    Boxes :

? On rough perspective exercise, please draw your correction lines with a different coloured pen. If you don't have one, that's fine.

++ On rough perspective, I can see you try to keep the horizontal line paralel and the vertical line perpendicular to the horizon line. Good stuff.

-- Lines are wobbly. Be confident in your markmaking.

++ Rotated boxes are rotated nicely!

++ Planning your boxes by putting a dot to mark them. Nice.

Overall, I think you did a great job at it. I can see in rotated boxes that you have a good understanding of box orientation. Though the consistent wobblying in all of them seem to indicate that you focus more on getting an accurate line instead of a confident one.

I hope to see a second try on the ghosted planes and ellipses in planes exercise to really nail down the key ghosting method.

    Next Steps:

Re-do 1 page of the ghosted planes and ellipses in planes exercise with having a confident markmaking in mind.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Heya, thanks for stopping by and giving a critique! I'm sorry for the late reply, I wasn't sure I had anything to say other than thank you.

For the eagerness part I do agree on that one, I was probably just trying to speedrunning it back then lol since I had school coming up.

Again, sorry for the late reply and thank you for taking the time and giving a critique!

    Lines :

++ Taking time to line up the starting point

? You didn't superimpose a couple lines in the 2nd page of Superimposed Lines. Reminder that we must try to complete the homeworks to the best of our ability.

    • Wobbly lines. Prioritize on having a confident and straight line, accuracy is our 2nd priority.

    Ellipses :

++ Ellipses are all drawn through 2 to 3 times. Nice.

    +++ Confident ellipses throughout !

    • Some ellipses doesn't fit nicely within the bounds. Maybe it will help you if you visualize them first before ghosting them.

? For funnels arc construction, the middle line is not placed evenly between the two arcs. Although these are part of the construction before you draw the ellipses, it might help you as the artist to use a ruler to mark two dots equally distanced from the center line before drawing the arcs.

    Boxes :

++ Rotated boxes are hella nice :sunglasses:

-- Lines are wobbly. Be confident in your markmaking.

++ Correction lines are drawn with different coloured pens ! Nicee

? Not a mistake but in rough perspective, no need to extend correction lines beyond the horizon, help keeps it tidier.

-- In rotated boxes and organic perspective, some of them have lines drawn multiple times, when drawing an outline, ghost them and draw it confidently. If you drew over them because you don't like how they look, leave it be. Mistakes are a part of the journey.

--- In organic perspective ,no dots placed before drawing the boxes. Planning your lines by placing a dot to where they will end up is an important step to the ghosting method, please keep this in mind.

Overall, You've done a great job. Main thing to notice is that your lines are still a bit wobbly, so remember to focus on confident markmaking rather than accuracy.

On organic perspective you did a good job, but try to plan out your lines by placing a dot first before ghosting them.

    I'm marking this complete.

For your own practice, I recommend to re-read the instructions in the line segment to get a better understanding of the ghosting method. Perhaps you were rushing to try and finish the lesson as quickly as possible and so you missed a couple of instructions. Eagerness is good but the details in them are there to help you.

    Lines :

? I noticed on upper right of page 1 of superimposed lines your lines have fraying on the start but not on the end, I assume you rotated the page?

    ++ Nice confident lines!

    • No repeating lines

    Ellipses :

++ Ellipses are all drawn through 2 to 3 times

-- Some ellipses have wobbling in them. We must prioritize confidence and smoothness over accuracy.

    • on tables of ellipses exercise, you seem to deform some ellipses to make them touch the bounds. Your first priority when drawing them is keeping a nice even and smooth ellipses, making them fit is your second.

    Boxes :

? On rough perspective exercise, please draw your correction lines with a different coloured pen. If you don't have one, that's okay.

--Lines are wobbly. Be confident in your markmaking.

    ++ Boxes are rotated nicely.

    I'm marking this complete.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
