Had a bad surface to draw on for the first few pages, then I got a clipboard. Much better. Thanks for looking.

Heya Heti! Congrats on completing lesson 1!

Line :

-- Lines are wobbly. Having a smooth and confident markmaking is our first priority, accuracy will come later. Some look smooth though so perhaps you weren't ghosting them enough.

++ Planning your lines by marking a dot.

Ellipses :

-- Some ellipses are only drawn through once. 2 to 3 times is the acceptable amount. Though I notice that most of them are drawn through 3 times, please be consistent in drawing them.

-- Overlapping ellipses in tables of ellipses. Plan your ellipses better by visualizing them first.

-- In tables of ellipses, the minor axis for each ellipses are different in each square. Reminder to have a clear minor axis for each square to give a better understanding of what you're lacking.

  • Ellipses are deformed to try and fit the boundaries. Prioritize smoothness and confidence over accuracy.

? In funnels exercise, the middle line does not cut the ellipses in 2 symmetrical halves. Measure the distance between your arches before drawing the middle line.

Boxes :

++ Correction lines are drawn with a different coloured pen.

++ On rough perspective, I can see you keeping the horizontal line parallel to the horizon and the vertical line perpendicular to it. Good stuff.

++ Rotated boxes are rotated nicely !

-- Rotated boxes should not have repeating lines.

-- Organic perspective should not have repeating lines.

++ Commiting to a line without drawing over them.

? Perhaps it would help you to draw hatching lines in the rotated boxes exercise to better see which side is which.

-- Rotated boxes should have their corner very close to each other. Yours seem to expand out, possibly to see them better, but that wasn't part of the exercise.

++ In organic perspective, boxes get smaller further out. Nice.

Overall, you seem to misunderstand or skipped a couple of important tidbits in the exercise page. Please give them a re-read a couple of times before and while doing the exercises. I want you to re-do 1 page each for the ghosted planes, elllipses in planes, and the tables of ellipses exercises. Remember to focus on getting a confident and straight line / ellipses, accuracy comes later.

Next Steps:

Re-do 1 page each for the ghosted planes, ellipses in planes, and tables of ellipses exercises.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hope it's ok to reply without doing my homework yet, just wanted to thank you for your help and advice! I'll get to work :)

I think I'm starting to get ellipses, they're really hard for me but I learned some things. I'd order another round of practice if it were me though lol

Looking good man! I could see your ellipses getting smoother and smoother on the exercises, especially on the bottom right box on the tables exercise. It'll get better overtime after you put them as your warmups. Continue on to the 250 boxes challenge.

Also sorry for the late reply, life haven't been the best hugger.

Next Steps:

250 boxes challenge

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
