Great job on all the exercises there, especially that Rotated boxes one.

You may want to practice the Ghosted lines a bit more to help with stopping right on the finishing point, but it's still a successful exercise there.

Just a heads up, it looks like you were using a ballpoint pen in the first few sheets. For this lesson that's ok, but in future lessons a 0.5 black fineliner is required.

    Next Steps:

Warm up that pen, and get ready. The 250 Box challenge is about to start!

    Awesome thanks!

I have done a couple of reviews of other's submissions, but haven't had a lot of time to do that between work, other hobbies, and drawing :)

And ya, rotated boxes was a challenge to complete.

I would recommend getting a black fineliner pen to avoid future confusion. The green marker reads as a ballpoint pen.

Thanks! I've been doing ghosted lines as part of my warm ups :)

For drawing lines, yep, rotate the page to make it the easiest the draw the line, and the same goes for ellipses

Welcome! First impressions of the homeworks looks like you've got the core concepts, however before you move on, you should get a fineliner ink pen to use. (See https://drawabox.com/article/ink) Using a ballpoint pen is an exception for lesson 1.

    Lines

    • Ghosted planes are missing the cross lines, but non-the less your lines are nice and confidant :)

    Ellipses

    • Nicely controlled tables of ellipses, and looks like you nailed the rest of the exercises for this section

    Boxes

    Next Steps:

Give rotated boxes another go, and you should be good to move onto the 250 box challenge.

    Greetings, and welcome back!

    Lines

    • Great lines, and looks you've got this part down pat :)

    Ellipses

    • You should look to only go around the ellipse twice at most, but you look to have nice confident lines

    Boxes

    • In your Rough Perspectives, your first, forth, and last frames are great. Might be good to try those ones again as warm ups in future sessions, but it's something that the 250 box challenge will drill into you a bit.

All in all, looks great to me, and I think you're ready to move onto the challenge.

    Next Steps:

Grab a stack of paper, as it's time to start drawing lots and lots of boxes!

    Greetings! Welcome to the course!

    Superimposed lines

    Ghosted Lines

    • Same comments as Superimposed Lines

    • Here it's still ok to overshoot. Ending your line at the right point will just come to you in time.

    Ghosted Planes

    • The density of boxes looks good :)

    • Same wobbling lines as the other exercises

    Table of Ellipses

    • The ellipses look good, though one of the things for the exercise is to try and redraw the same ellipse of the same size in each box.

    • You did a good job of positioning the ellipses :)

    • The Second Page? (album is backwards, one with 8 boxes) looks a lot better

    Ellipses on Planes

    • Those are looking really good, but your brain is still driving.

    Funnels

    • Remember to draw through your ellipses at least twice.

    • The ellipses should be getting wider the further out from the center

    Plotted Proportion

    • Whoops, this exercise is a special one where the whole thing is supposed to be done with a ruler or straight edge (https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/14/video)

    • More boxes of different sizes would be good.

    Rough Proportion

    • Page needs to be split into thirds, and 4-6 boxes in each.

    • Use a ruler to draw lines back to the horizon extending the ones you drew

    Now for the fun ones...

    Rotated Boxes

    Organic Perspective

    • Page needs to be split into thirds

    Next Steps:

You'll need to head back to the beginning and tell your brain to stop backseat driving. Let your muscles learn to drive. The Ghosted Planes exercise is a good one to repeat as that's just a lot of lines. Remember to ghost them (move your pen through the motion just above the paper a few times, and then draw your line), and do it quickly so that your brain doesn't have time to take control back.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
