    Hi BigSillyPuppy,

I can see you have worked hard on lesson 1 & on the whole you have done a good job.

The 1 exception is the Rotated Boxes exercise. I am going to ask you to go back & review the notes for this one & repeat the exercise. You will see in the notes that you are asked to add 2 boxes either side of the centre box so you have 5 across vertically & horizontally. Your boxes are pretty funky but this is not what you are being asked to do.

I agree with the other comments below.

    Next Steps:

Please repeat the Rotated Boxes exercise with the correct number of boxes. Once you have this completed please resubmit.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hi there,

First of all well done for completing lesson 1. This takes some discipline & you can pat yourself on the back for completing all the lessons.

I will give you a few things to think about for each section of lines, ellipses & boxes plus some general thoughts for you.

    1. Remember to draw from the shoulder. If you are not sure what this means reread the section https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/3/shoulder

    2. Lines: how you execute your lines is very important. I notice you draw most of your lines confidently but you can lose your focus at the start & finish point of each line. Try to start & stop each line at the correct point you have plotted.

    3. Ellipses: some of your ellipses are passing outside the edge on the tables & the planes. Keep this to a minimum. Remember to ghost each ellipse & draw confidently. The more you draw you will improve. For the funnels keep in mind the minor axis (the line in the middle) should cut the ellipse in 2 symetrical halves.

    4. On the lessons drawing boxes using vanishing points I can see you have applied yourself. It is a good way to develop your understanding about space & how forms are drawn within it. Your use of the line corrections to show correct placement of lines is informative & a good learning opportunity for you.

    5. Your rotated boxes are missing some boxes. If you check the bottom & top layers you have 3 boxes instead of 5. Please add these in & resubmit. As you have drawn the boxes quite tightly It may be easier to redo the lesson & draw the boxes with more space. I will leave it up to you which you prefer. I know this lesson is challenging. Either way I need to see this lesson with 5 boxes across & 5 boxes down.

    6. For the organic perspective it looks like you had some fun! Take care to draw your lines all the way to the plotted points. In some instances you are stopping short. Also you have not shown any changes in line weight. Remember to add confident line weight to the lines that overlap.

It is great to see your work & with that one resubmission you will be done.

    Next Steps:

Please resubmit the rotated boxes exercise. Either redraw the boxes 5 across & 5 down or add them in to your drawing. At the moment your drawing is missing 4 boxes.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hi There,

Thanks for pushing me, I appreciate it. All valid points you made in your comments.

I have drawn an additional 14 boxes as some were abandoned. I allowed mistakes, focused on ghosting every single line, tried less dramatic perspective & checked accuracy from centre of Y- axis.

I have pased the link to the jpegs saved on imgur here.

Thanks again for your time reviewing my drawings.

Keep on truckin', man. Look back over what you have done & it will all come back to you. I love drawing those boxes. Looking forward to working on the cylinders soon.

    Thanks for your comments.

To your point about line confidence I realise this is an issue for me. I have to keep fighting the urge to try & redo my lines. Sometimes I win. Sometimes not.

To start with I was plotting the boxes myself but as I went along I started following the axis generator app. So some a generated by me & some are generated by the app.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Thanks man. I get myself confused then it all seems to go to pot. So pleased when it seems I get one right but there is a ton of wrong along the way.

Anyway, thants for your really helpful comments.

    Hi There,

Thanks so much for taking the time to review my exercises. I have worked on the repeat exercises you suggested. Focusing on making confident marks & trying not to be too concerned about making mistakes. I was tempted to correct many times but I resisted the urge. And I will try to stop the grinding of exercises. This is hard to resist too but will continue to try.

Thanks for your time reviewing my repeat work.

I actually wondered about this myself but did not ask ( the only dumb question is the one you don't ask, right?! ). So thanks for bringing it up. And thanks for the clarification Uncomfortable & Lookleft.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
