Thank you so much for your critique! I attempted the organic box exercise. I tried really hard not to sketch over lines too much. I want to correct all of my lines when I see they're off a bit is my problem. And you're absolutely right, it draws so much more attention to it. I'll work avoid doing this.

And, responding to your question about rough perspective exercise: no, I didn't use a ruler until drawing the box edges toward the horizon line.

Ellipses are not my friend, but I'll keep practicing to get that smooth confident swoop.

I fear you may have not fully read/watched/listened to the lesson instructions and explanations

    Next Steps:

    • Line exercises do not appear to have been drawn with the shoulder or with proper ghosting. There's no rush to mark the page. Try ghosting your marks twice as many times as you attempted the first time.

    • I would have liked to see more planes. I'm impressed the intersections in the majority of the planes is near spot on. Next time, see if you can really fill the page with those shapes. Also, the ellipses need to touch all four sides of the plane. The ellipses look fantastic; just need them to touch the planes.

    • Ellipse tables: I would spend more time here practicing your ghost technique. Understand that the exercise instructed us to fill the tables by touching the lines. Also, you may make a second pass with your pen. See here https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/12/step2

    • The funnels are okay, but could benefit another try after you review the materials.

    • The rough perspective exercise is incorrect. After drawing your boxes using the ghosting technique you are then to return and plot the vanishing lines to critique your own work.

    • I would use an entire page for one set of three panels of organic boxes. Drawing bigger is easier. I promise.

    • I'm siked to see your attempt at the rotating boxes. I don't think it's a requirement to try it again, but I'm sure after you review the lessons and have more practice you'll have no problem producing the rotation.

Please redo the ellipse and box exercises after reviewing the lesson materials.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Overall, great execution.

Rough perspective exercise; I see a pattern of weak lines. Perhaps some of the boxes were drawn at the elbow? Maybe the lines were marked without ghosting?

I'm led to believe the table of ellipses exercises were drawn without much ghosting. A number of the ellipses have sharp corners. The ellipses in planes, a few do not make enough contact with the edges of the planes.

I like the way you darkened some of the lines in the organic boxes exercise.

    Next Steps:

Hold onto your technique as you move forward to the next lesson. Give yourself time to stage your marks with ghosting.

The first line exercise: you did a great job maintaining the starting position with your marks. The lines could be drawn with more confidence I think. I see a bit of wobble throughout.

The ellipse work was executed very well.

Organic boxes exercise: I struggled with this bit myself for quite a while. The vanishing points for many of your boxes in this exercise are not consistent which leads to the warped appearance.

    Next Steps:

I would recommend you move on to the 250 box challenge. I think this will help tremendously.

Great execution. Appears to have followed the instructions. I enjoyed seeing how the boxes transformed the closer to 250 you reached.

    Next Steps:

Please continue to lesson 2. Remember, perspective practice will help enormously when working with contour technique.

Lovely! I see your strokes become more and more confident with each exercise.

The plotted perspective exercise was hard to review as the boxes were large and all clumped around the same area.

    Next Steps:

When preparing to draw, remember to consider the space around existing objects and the object you are about to mark.

Keep those lines confident! Please continue to the next lesson carrying with you the skills you acquired here.

Majority of line-work looks to have been drawn at the shoulder, great job.

I can see confidence was lost as you began the organic exercise and some strokes were drawn at the elbow or wrist.

    Ellipses appear clear and concise.

    Next Steps:

Continue to the next lesson. Take what you have learned here with you.

It appears that maybe you may have rushed through a few of the exercises here.

Ellipses in general do not fit within the directed spaces; they're either too small or too large, or do not connect with the drawn bounds.

The single vanishing point/rough perspective exercise was performed incorrectly. We're not plotting lines to the vanishing point, instead to the horizon. Please review this exercise again.

    Next Steps:

You may use a ruler or straight edge for the frame and horizon line. Every line after this point should be drawn freehand, using the ghosting method.

We are not plotting these red lines back to the VP - just to the horizon line. This will show us a concrete idea of how far off we were.

Please review the rough perspective exercise again.

Nicely done. I can see you took your time and planned your marks.

The organic box exercises lost a bit of the confidence seen in previous exercises. But with each page, the pen strokes show improvement.

    Next Steps:

Continue with the next lesson, but remember the work you performed here. Confident strokes after planning/ghosting whilst drawing from the shoulder.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
