Discord was my preference to start with, so many helpful friendly people there.

Brettinabox in the post "How do I know when I should move on to the next exercise?"

I went straight to the discord and asked a few times, people that were further along told me if and what I needed rather quickly.

Brettinabox in the post "The Other 50% with draw a box"

2022-11-05 14:15

I feel that the reason behind the 50% rule is to keep students from burnout. It is more challenging to create than it is to follow directions. Eventhough drawabox has its moments, it is very thorough and well explained however the other 50% has no easy lessons. How does one be creative and have fun with drawing? How does one draw something and not look at all the mistakes? It is a deep frustration that will take much effort to let go of and will either lead to burnout or to an impatient drive to complete more drawabox lessons. Without that creativity and passion to create, finishing drawabox will leave you lost.

I liked using .3 on the boxes then doing to outline in .5 but depending on your camera and lighting, 0.3 is hard to see.

Brettinabox in the post "is drawabox good for stylization?"

2022-09-08 16:43

Drawabox is NOT about realism (not even about fundamentals technically) it's about how to see and draw things in 3D space.

To answer your question, I feel as a beginner, lesson 0-2 is helpful, I wouldn't recommend the 250 box challenge, and I would also recommend switching between drawabox and figure studies. Drawabox's strength is going to be when you want to draw backgrounds and very machinelike objects that need perspective and sharp corners.

EDIT: not*

Brettinabox in the post "Is drawing boxes really the best way to practice perspective?"

2022-08-31 15:05

The rough perspective exercise was the most helpful for me. I started to experiment with different compositions on boxes that could be refined. Doing study and creative sketching I feel are still separate disciplines as sketching will put into practice what you study.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd7LNfWOjiM This is the answer, although I have never quite understood it myself. I know how important it is though because so many drawings will be done without visually seeing the VP.

Brettinabox in the post "Doing the course digitally?"

The reason for doing it traditionally is explained in the material. You run the risk of not developing the mindset needed to make a confident, fluid mark when you have an undo button or are easily able to erase your mistakes.

Brettinabox in the post "DaB, ADD, and Depression; Is This Course Right For Me?"

2021-12-23 17:23

Diagnosed with child and adult ADD, restarted DAB 3 or 4 times? Last one I got to about 180 boxes. I think you should be careful not to put too much pressure on yourself. There are plenty of helpful things to practice and you won't see those results immediately anyway. Only when I come back to it do I get alittle more wisdom each time.

Something that I rather started to enjoy is doing more rough perspective exercises but try to arrange the boxes in a pleasing composition such as a walkway, skate park, laboratory, but not getting wrapped up in the details. Remember that the fundamentals aren't going to represent finished art, we still have to put in that creative style and context.

DAB is great as it is very structured and helps someone like us be consistent, however it can be alittle rigid. Everyone determines their own balance of study and play however it is still important to know the reason for the rule. For instruction like DAB it is more important to know the why than just following orders, because only following orders will lead to a different kind of burnout.

I'd love to see your homework for the lessons if you have like an imgur link or something ?

Brettinabox in the post "The Rotated Boxes exercise is too hard for me, i tried my best but result is terrible. Should i move on?"

2021-11-23 17:08

You should post the boxes for review either on the website or in the discord and let someone who has done it before decide.

Asking for validation here without even posting the work is not fair.
