Hi EL2D! Here's some feedback for lesson 1.

Lines - Superimposed lines look good. There's some fraying at both ends for a couple of them so keep in mind to carefully place your pen at the start before executing your line. Your ghosted lines look good. They're confident and flowing. I notice there's one line that was repeated and you should aim to not attempt lines again to correct them. Ghosted planes also look good. There's some arching for some of the lines. This is could happen from not using the shoulder as a pivot point or arching your pen too much in one direction. Overall, very well done.

Ellipses - Ellipses look great. They're very confident. Very good job keeping them within bounds. I notice that for some you go around more than 3 times. Aim for just 2-3 times around.

Boxes - Boxes look good. No issue with plotted perspective. Rough perspective looks good too. You did really well on the rotated boxes. All boxes rotated. For organic perspective, sizes for some of the boxes seem too small based on their location on the line but other than that I think there is a good gradual change in size to give a sense of depth.

Very good job and congratulations on completing lesson 1! Make sure to use these exercises as warm-ups to start your DaB sessions.

Thank you for the feedback! And you're right, I didn't add extra lineweight to the silhouettes because I had it in my mind that it was optional but it's something I will definitely start including to my future boxes.

Hi Gaogamesh! Here's some feedback on your exercises for lesson 1.

Lines - Superimposed lines are okay. There is fraying at both ends for several of your lines which is something we should avoid. Try to take your time to carefully place your pen on the starting point before executing your line. Ghosted line looks good. There's no wobbliness in your lines. There is slight arching which could be caused from not drawing using your shoulder as a pivot point or by how you hold/maneuver your pen. Ghosted planes look good too. Remember to place starting and end points when you're ghosting instead of free-handing your lines. You seemed to have missed this for the crosses + (not the X from corner to corner). Overall, lines seem confident and flowing!

Ellipses - Your ellipses look good. In your ellipses in ghosted planes exercise, there are a couple that didn't make it to being drawn through at least twice. The rest are fine being drawn through three time. Ellipses in tables needs a little work. A few ellipses are not touching any bounds and many only touching one bound leaving empty space around them. The ellipses should be fit snuggly into their tables. Other than that, their angles are consistent within each table, good size variation, and not a lot of overlapping. Funnels look good. The ellipses are fit snuggly, there is a gradual change in size. Only note is to draw through your ellipses two-three times.

Boxes - Plotted perspective looks good. Rough perspective looks fine as well. It also seems you forgot a line for the top left corner box in the middle frame on the first page. The rotated boxes is challenging but I think you did okay. The front faces of the boxes, for the most part, are rotated, which is what we're aiming for and I think you did this well for the middle row and middle column. I think a struggle you had was with the backs of the boxes. I think what would have helped rotate the back of the boxes more was to use the corners of neighboring boxes to plot points to construct new boxes. Organic perspective looks okay as well. Some sizes for the boxes seem to be out of place with their location on the line but for the most part, there is a sense of the depth a gradual change of size. One thing to keep in mind is to not repeat lines, meaning to not attempt them again to fix a line--seen on multiple boxes throughout the exercises.

But congratulations and good job on completing lesson 1! Be sure to use these exercises as warm-up to start each DaB session. I recommend the ellipses table focusing on drawing the ellipses through 2-3 times, touching the bounds so they're fit snuggly, and ghosted lines to straighten out arching.

Hi Mechanate! Here's some feedback for lesson 1.

Lines - I think you did okay on the superimposed lines. I think one thing to mention is that several of them seem to be fray at both ends. Take your time to carefully place your pen at the starting point before executing your line. Fraying at the end of the line is okay but not at the starting point. Another thing to mention is that there is a bit of wobbliness in your lines. Remember that we are aiming for smooth and flowing lines--accuracy comes with practice and experience. Your ghosted lines look good. Some lines still have a slight wobble but I see that you've improved. Some lines are slightly arched which can be caused by not using your shoulder as a pivot point or having your pen pointed too much towards one direction. You can remedy this by pointing a bit towards the opposite direction to level it out. In your ghosted planes exercise, your lines flow much better. There's still some lines with wobble but not many. It's difficult to tell if you placed starting and end points for when you did the cross lines but if not, keep that in mind when implementing this into your warm-ups.

Ellipses - I think you did okay! There's some wobbliness in your lines which are mistakes according to DaB. The aim is to have your lines flow. A tip is to focus on ghosting your ellipses until you feel comfortable with the momentum before you put pen to paper. Other than that, most of your ellipses are within and touching all bounds and consistent in angles.

Boxes - Plotted perspective is good--no issues there. Rough perspective overall, is good. One thing to keep in mind is to not repeat lines. There is one line in the second page in the bottom frame where you restarted a line. It is important that you do not go back to redo a line no matter how off it is and just go with it. Be confident with the line you made. The rotated boxes is a challenging exercise but I think you did okay. The front of the boxes rotate fine but what stands out are the back of the boxes. I think a common hurdle you faced in this exercise was drawing the back of the boxes. I think what would have helped was to use corners of the neighboring boxes to help you construct the nearby boxes, which was explained in the lesson. Also, there are about 4 boxes where you didn't draw through them or are missing lines (4 in the outer corners and the outer left and right box in the middle row). Organic perspective for the most part, looks good. There is a good gradual change in size for most of the boxes but there are some boxes that seem out of place due to its size based on its location on the line. Also, careful with making boxes too exaggerated because it can make a box "seem" bigger.

Also, I think that your lines did improved and flowed better by the end of lesson 1.

Anyhow, congratulations on completing lesson 1! Be sure to use these exercises as warm-up to start your drawabox sessions. I recommend that you do table of ellipses and ghosted lines.

Hi Tatilulu! Here's some feedback for lesson 1.

Lines - Superimposed lines look great. Ghosted lines look great too. Very confident strokes. There is ever so slight arching for a couple of them. This could be from arching your pen too much towards one direction or not using your shoulder as a pivot. Ghosted planes look great. There is just one plane where you missed one line but that's it.

Ellipses - Ellipses in ghost planes look great. Most are within and touching all bounds with just a few not touching or outside of bounds. Ellipses in tables is very well done. A few out-of-bound lines but not many and a few not touching all bounds. Angles of the ellipses in their boxes are consistent and there is good size variation. Funnels look great. Good gradual increase in size as your move outwards from the middle. I think the outermost ellipses for some of the funnels could have been a little wider along the minor axis to take up space where the funnels are empty.

Boxes - Plotted perspective looks good, no issues found. Rough perspective looks good too. There's a slight arch for some of the lines but nothing too bad. Only thing to remember is to not repeat lines. It's important that you continue onwards despite the line not coming out the way you were hoping. Rotated boxes is quite a challenging exercise but I think you did well. All of the boxes are rotated even if ever so slightly. Good job on completing it. Organic perspective looks fine as well. Good gradual change in size for depth. There are some perspective issues not something to worry about for this exercise. Also there are repeating lines.

Congratulations on completing lesson 1! Don't forget to use these exercises as warm-up before your drawabox sessions.

Hi Lead! Here's some feedback for lesson 1.

A quick skim of your exercises and it appears to be promising.

Lines - Superimposed lines are good. One thing to note is that for a couple of the swirls and a couple of the lines, there seems to bit a bit of fraying at both ends but it's not too bad. Remember to take your time to carefully place your pen on the starting point before executing your line. Ghosted lines look great. Very confident strokes. There are a few that have a very slight arc and this can be remedied with drawing more from your shoulder pivot or arching towards the opposite direction with your pen. Ghosted planes look good too.

Ellipses - Great that you spotted lines out of bounds! Overall, I think you did well. The angles seem consistent through each box. On the first page there are a few that aren't completely drawn through twice and there is one ellipse at the bottom left where it was attempted a second time. On the second page, there seems to be some ellipses that have been drawn through more than three times. The ellipses in ghosted planes look good too. Not too many out of bounds. Keep in mind to draw through your ellipses just 2-3 times. For funnels, I think there is a good gradual change in size outwards from the center.A little too much overlapping for the ellipse in the funnel in the center of the page but the rest are fine.

Boxes - Plotted perspective looks great! Very good attempt on rough perspective. Note, some lines have a little bit of arching.

Rotated boxes is challenging but I think you made a very good attempt at it. The middle row and middle column rotate well. I think most of the boxes are rotated well. It's very subtle towards the outer corners but they rotate--some ever so slightly. Overall, organic perspective looks great. Good gradual change in size. Some lines seem to be repeated again but not sure if it's to thicken the outline or correct the line. Note, do not repeat a line unless it's to thicken the outline, otherwise, keep going.

Congrats on completing Lesson 1! Don't forget to use these exercises as warm-ups. I recommend the ellipses table focusing on drawing through 2-3 times and ghosted lines to straighten out wobbliness and arching.

Good job on completing lesson 1! Here's some feedback.

    Lines

Superimposed lines - For the most part, the results are as expected. One thing I do notice though is that for a couple or several of the swirls there seems to be fraying at both ends. In order to avoid fraying at both ends, take your time to carefully place your pen on the dot before executing the line. Fraying towards the end of the line is okay.

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/1585f266.jpg

Ghosted lines - For a couple of the attempts, there seems to be a slight wobbliness but it's not too bad. There is also some arcing in your lines. This can happen from not drawing from the pivot of the shoulder or arcing the pen too much in one direction. I also notice that there are extra lines accompanying alongside several of the attempts but it seems like it could have been caused by having your pen too close to the paper and touching it while you were ghosting.

Ghosted planes - I think you did a good job. Your lines here are pretty confident. One thing to keep in mind is to not repeat a line, no matter how off it is (2 Planes all the way to the left in the middle row and top left corner on the second page). It's important that you accept it as it is, let it go, and move on. Another thing to keep in mind as well is to remember to plot your starting and end points when executing a line.

    Ellipses

Ellipses table - Not bad but it seems like for a couple of the ellipses you've drawn through more than 3 times. Three times around is enough, twice is preferred. For the most part, there's not a lot of overlapping between the ellipses, some ellipses are not within the bounds but not too bad.

Ellipses in ghosted planes - For the most part, I think you did a good job on this one. It also seems that for a couple of them you've gone back and redid the ellipses (bottom left corner and top right corner on the first page).

Funnels - Good! Most of ellipses seem to have been drawn through 2-3 times. There does seem to be several ellipses which seem to have been gone through more than 3 times.

    Boxes

Plotted perspective - There doesn't seem to be any issue with this one. Great job!

Rough perspective - Overall, good attempt! There is one box in the first page where you forgot to mark in the perspective lines but I don't think that proves to be too much of a problem.

Rotated boxes - This is a tough exercise but you didn't do too bad. The boxes in the middle row and the middle column are rotated well. I also think that the rotation along every column (up and down) is pretty good! There are some boxes, at the top and bottom row of the left quadrants that need just a little bit more rotation. Other than that good job on completing this exercise!

Organic perspective - I think you did well on this one too. Some mistakes in the perspective but that's okay. There is a good gradual change in size to give it that sense of depth.

Overall, good work! And again, congrats on completing Lesson 1. Be sure to use these exercises as a warm-up before completing the boxes. I would recommend table of ellipses and ghosted lines to straighten out wobbliness and arcing.

Thank you so much for your thorough critique! It is much appreciated.

I still have a bit of trouble with drawing from my shoulder and tend to use more of my elbow. I've noticed it and trying to adjust. I've also started working on the arcs a bit yesterday in my warm-ups.

For the ellipses, I started adding them to my warm-ups yesterday. I will also try to be more conscientious about the number of times I draw through ellipses.

And I agree for the rough perspective boxes. I didn't try plotting them on the horizon but it's something that I could try next time. The rotated boxes exercises was a bit tough and I feel like it would have gone better if I drew the center box a bit larger or didn't add the fourth box. It got muddier towards the outer edges.

Thank you again. The ghosted lines have been my main warm-up exercise before I start my DaB sessions. The ellipses are something that I will start to incorporate.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
