Didn't take a picture of the ghosted planes exercise before I put ellipses on them.

Hi there, here's feedback for Lesson 1.

Lines - Superimposed Lines look great. There's a little bit of wobble in Ghosted Lines, but your linework gets more confident in Ghosted Planes, so well done there! There's also a bit of arcing in the longer Ghosted Lines which may come from drawing too much from elbow. I suggest doing warmups with Ghosted Lines before starting your next DaB homework, to continue practicing accurate lines without losing confidence, and to get used to drawing lines from shoulder, if you need to do that. Here's the L1 page about Drawing From Shoulder. If that is not an issue, another strategy to correct arcing is to adjust your hand movement slightly to arc the line in the opposite way, so it ends up being straight.

Ellipses - Great work, they look very confident and flowing, and you drew a variety of degrees and tilts. Funnels also look good, ellipses are all following the minor axis line. Only thing to comment on - you've drawn through many ellipses 3-4 times. I recommend drawing over the ellipses twice only - it helps develop confidence while also practicing accuracy/keeping them inside the boundaries. Why not add a few Tables of Ellipses to your warmup, to practice drawing-through ellipses only twice.

Boxes - No issue with Plotted Perspective. Great work with Rough Perspective, the linework stays confident and clean all the way. One thing you could've tried was draw boxes that sit right on the horizon - all of them are currently above or below the horizon - but this is not a big issue.

Rotated Boxes is the most challenging exercise in Lesson 1, and I think you've done well - the box construction is crisp and neat. The boxes around the centre one don't rotate enough, ie. they have a more squarish shape than a spherical ball shape. But well done with finishing this tough exercise! (If you were still unsure about "not rotating enough", it's explained here.) And Organic Perspective looks great, they are all rotating and growing in size and overlapping nicely.

Congrats on finishing Lesson 1, I think you've done a great job. Don't forget to use these exercises as warmup before you do those boxes -- I recommend Tables of Ellipses and drawing through them twice only, and Ghosted Lines to straighten out any arcing for long lines.

Next Steps:

You're ready for 250 Boxes.

And since you've completed Lesson 1, why not join in giving community feedback to other Lesson 1 exercises -- it helps you improve your own understanding of the lessons and techniques learnt. Here's a guide to get started on giving feedback: https://pastebin.com/dYnFt9PQ

Thank you so much for your thorough critique! It is much appreciated.

I still have a bit of trouble with drawing from my shoulder and tend to use more of my elbow. I've noticed it and trying to adjust. I've also started working on the arcs a bit yesterday in my warm-ups.

For the ellipses, I started adding them to my warm-ups yesterday. I will also try to be more conscientious about the number of times I draw through ellipses.

And I agree for the rough perspective boxes. I didn't try plotting them on the horizon but it's something that I could try next time. The rotated boxes exercises was a bit tough and I feel like it would have gone better if I drew the center box a bit larger or didn't add the fourth box. It got muddier towards the outer edges.

Thank you again. The ghosted lines have been my main warm-up exercise before I start my DaB sessions. The ellipses are something that I will start to incorporate.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
