Thank you so much for your solid feedback this is really spot on, I will try to keep everything you said in mind moving out to lesson 2 and experiment some more with this convergence in pair to fix it.

Thanks again, have a great day.

Heya Rob, thank you so much for this feedback,

For the messy exercises I'm sorry this won't happen again, after doing some critics myself I understand the importance of submitting clean work.

I trained a lot ellipses during my warm-ups and aimed for smoothness over accuracy and definitely improved a lot regarding this in my opinion.

Here is the rotated boxes exercise https://imgur.com/gallery/i8sK0wg

There is still some wobbling here and there due to my brain wanting accuracy but I'm working on that and the boxes at the extremities aren't small enough to express the rotation...

Heya, congrats on finishing the lesson for the second time, that's some dedication keep it on !

I'll try to use the your first submission too to make this review a bit more constructive !

    LINES

    • Your superimposed lines look good, you placed correctly the pen at the start of your lines, you did not in your first submission so that's better! But... not for all of them, watch out for that, for the medium and longer lines you tend to have more arcing and that's okay ! Your lines are confident, you should try to draw by arcing voluntarily the other way. You are also fraying toward the end but this will reduce with consistent practice aka the warm-ups. Also I see a bit of wobbling toward the end of your lines (meaning you're trying to correct where your arm is going), you should not try to aim for accuracy for now keep that in mind.

    • Your ghosted lines look great ! There is less arcing, for the most part I'll give you the same advice. Also your are missing some of the dots but that's okay, accuracy comes with practice.

    • Great work again for your ghosted planes nothing much more to say for me, they look way better than your first submission and you fixed your issue with the middle line, don't worry about missing the end point of the lines for now and practice confident lines. Also for one of the plane you marked two times the same lines, don't do that, a wrong mark is here to help you learn, you have to accept it :/

Great work I can already some improvements and you already got confidence in your lines. Pro tip watch where you want to go when tracing a line not the nib of your pen or your hand

    ELLIPSES

    • For the table of ellipses, You went through some ellipses more than two or three times, avoid it (try to go through them 2 times only). I saw that you didn't do it that much on your first submission did you take enough time to read the exercise this time? Ellipsis are hard and need a lot of practice, try to find the gesture rather than being accurate. You went out of bound for most of them but that's okay you should not be worrying about that for now so don't pressure yourself. On the good side tho some ellipsis really have smooth lines that's nice !

    • I will give the same remark for your ellipsis in planes, try to make each side of the ellipse touch each side of the plane but it's not a priority, CONFIDENCE IS.

    • Same thing for the funnel, go through them 2 times only and do not worry about going out of bounds, you did way better than your first submission though. You tend to draw your ellipsis with an angle (they're inclined, the major axis of the ellipsis is not perpendicular to middle line of the funnel).

Your ellipses need accuracy, but it's not what you should be aiming for now, try to practice by drawing more confident and smooth ellipses and when you get the flow you'll be able to practice toward accuracy

    BOXES

    • Your plotted perspective is neat ! nice work.

    • For your rough perspective you want to keep your width lines parallel to horizon and height lines perpendicular to horizon, if not it's going to make your boxes distorted.

    • On your rotated boxes some seems a bit out of alignment, you should take your time when drawing, also I see a lot more wobbliness in your lines than before. This exercise is though tho, try to do it during your warm-ups every now and then to keep practicing on it (not every warm-up tho). Also remember that the vanishing points of the rotated boxes slide along the horizon (take a look at the exercise page)

    • On organic perspective you didn't add any lineweight to the overlapping boxes so sometimes it's kinda hard to guess which lines belongs to who. Lineweight should be added with confident ghosted lines, and solely to the part of lines to overlap, not to whole lines. (watch the exercise video for more infos). Also I don't see much variation in the rotation of the boxes they all seem to be facing the same direction.

Nice work for the boxes but I saw a regression in the quality of your line (wobbling), you want to take the necessary time to complete each exercise to the best of your abilities

Overall great work, keep practicing for confidence, accuracy will come later on, for your ellipses don't worry about them not being perfect yet and deviating during the "second round", practice drawing them confidently and smoothly. Do not forget that the exercises you just did are now used as warm-ups, you will choose 3 of them randomly (or if you have an idea on what you need to work on choose them based on that, but do change what you're practicing from time to time) each day to practice (I recommend practicing those everyday even for 5min). Since you're submitting this for the second time I won't ask for revisions but you might want to practice Rough Perspective, Rotated Boxes and Organic perspective from time to time in your warm-ups, tho keep in mind that you SHOULD NOT GRIND so take it easy, it took me one month before I tackled rotated boxes again.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the infamous 250 boxes challenge, remember take it slow, and do the warm-ups they really do wonders, more than you can imagine if done properly.

Heya, glade to see ya back !

Although you could have started from where you left off, that's your choice, your submission is really clean so I will try my best to find some pointers to help ya get even further !

So usually I would go through each exercise individually but honestly there is not much to say as a per exercise basis you did amazing and already understand the goal of each of them and their rules.

One thing I can mention though is that on the funnels one for some off them you did the outer ellipsis thinner than they should be (bottom right of the homework page).

For the ellipsis in plan I don't think that deforming them is a huge matter since that's how it works in perspective, here is an example with a crazy field of view https://imgur.com/a/T43aU3r as you can see it's not symmetrical.

You mentioned struggling with the rotating boxes VPs, next time you do those for warm-ups you could use different colors to identify which VP belongs to who. Also you can use the previous boxes edges and points to place the new ones to avoid variation in the gaps width.

In general, for the ellipsis it seems that you tend to go slower near the "tips", there is some wobbling, you need to focus on confidence first and accuracy will come over time (I know it's frustrating, but ye you know the chore, bear with it for now and trust the process) and for some of them you only went through one time instead of two. For your lines they look good and confident, thought I can perceive a very faint arcing (to work on that try to consciously arc the other way) and sometimes when you get near the second dot there is a small wobbling (or deviation) meaning you're aiming for accuracy rather than confidence.

Well that's a short review for once lol, you can move on to the 250 boxes challenge and do not forget about the warm-ups but you should be familiar with those already.

Have a nice day and best of luck for your DaB journey.

Yay no worries if you don't mind I'll ping you on discord right after submitting this message so you don't miss it :D

Nicely done for the submission I can already see some better line confidence, you can move on to the 250 boxes challenge, remember to take it slow no need to rush ;D

Also do not forget about the warmups they really play a huge role in your progression!

    Next Steps:

Head to the famous 250 boxes challenge and use the exercises you did for L1 as warm-ups before each drawing session

Heya, congrats on finishing the lesson !

    I'll be reviewing your homework.

Great work I can already some improvements and you already got confidence in your lines. Also it seems you're putting a lot of pressure on your pen, you even "marked" the paper for the superimposed line exercise, be careful with a fineliner you'll destroy the nib

    ELLIPSES

    • For the table of ellipses, You went through each ellipses two times that's good, and you tried to stay in bounds. Don't worry to much about not being accurate for now.

    • A ye the pen died on the ellipsis in planes I take it... Nice work here also, try to make each side of the ellipse touch each side of the plane.

    • On some of your funnels the minor axis (line in the center) do not cut the ellipsis in two symmetrical part.

Your ellipses need accuracy, but it's not what you should be aiming for now, try to practice by drawing more confident and smooth ellipses and when you get the flow you'll be able to practice toward accuracy

Heya, congrats on finishing the lesson !

    I'll reviewing your homework.

    LINES

    • Your superimposed lines look good, you placed correctly the pen at the start of your lines but not for all of them, watch out for that, for the medium and longer lines you tend to have more wobbling and that's okay ! But, it shows a lack of confident lines, you should try to draw a bit more faster, always favor a confident line over an accurate one.

    • Your ghosted lines look great ! There is less wobbling, for the most part I'll give you the same advice, try to draw faster to get an confident line (more straight) before training for accuracy.

    • Great work again for your ghosted planes nothing much more to say for me, don't worry about missing the end point of the lines for now and practice confident lines.

Great work I can already some improvements but keep practicing your line toward confidence rather than accuracy for now.

    ELLIPSES

    • For the table of ellipses, You went through each ellipses two times that's good, but same advice as the lines you should go for confidence over accuracy, almost all your ellipses are in bounds and not overlapping each other but there is a lot of wobbling in your lines.

    • I will give the same remark for your ellipsis in planes.

    • On some of your funnels the minor axis (line in the center) do not cut the ellipsis in two symmetrical part, watch out for that (the funnel on the top left of the page and the one in in the middle at the bottom), for the ellepsis same advice, go for confidence.

Your ellipses are really accurate, that's great but not what you should be aiming for now, try to practice by drawing more confident and smooth ellipses.

Heya, thanks for your work !

First things first you're doing great! I don't see that much wobbling in your lines so you're drawing fast enough and got confident lines, there is some that are still a bit hesitant but you'll get them with practice. Your pages of superimposed lines are a bit too loaded don't forget to not grind to much. Also it was not mandatory but you did not do any arcs with the superimposed technique, you might want to do some for your next warm-up session. You should watch out for fraying lines on both ends, the line should not fray on the starting dot of the superimposed lines.

For the ellipses you should only draw through each one no more than 3 times (2 times preferably). otherwise they look good and confident, some don't reach all the sides in the ellipses tables but again practice will help with that.

Lastly the boxes, you shall NOT draw a mark MORE THAN ONCE, this is especially for your first page of organic perspective, if you wanted to add line weight you should only do it for the part of the line that overlap with another box and not over the full length of the line.

Overall you did a good job, the rotated boxes exercise is well done and you already show some confidence in your markings, now you need to practice accuracy which you'll do through your warm-ups by doing ghosted plane and superimposed lines.

Don't hesitate to use the ghosted planes you make to train ellipses as well.

I saw that you already finished the 250 boxes challenge, remember to not rush things and take the necessary time for each exercise / warm-up.

    Next Steps:

Keep practicing with warm-ups (I recommend doing them daily even for 5min) using ghosted planes, ellipses and superimposed lines. Since you're done with your boxes you should wait for getting feedback on them so use this time for the 50% rule, have fun !

    Heya !

Thank you so much for your feedback, sorry for the messy upload :x

I did the exercises asked you can check them here:

My lines are a bit wobbly still, especially for the rough perspective exercise I struggle using my full arm for shorts marks.

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
