Thanks a lot for the critique! I made 50 more cylinders in boxes after re-watching the video. I have no idea why I forgot to check the lines created by both contact point of the cylinder. I hope it's better now!

Thanks a lot for the clear and structured critique! It was great to see you refer to the comments you made on the last lesson. It was also really helpful to think about my new animal constructions while having your comments in mind.

Here are the 4 new pages, I would happily make new ones if necessary: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ChLUEZPURt5NCA7X9

    Hello!

Thanks a lot for the critique! It was very clear and straight to the point. I have rewatched the insect introduction and it helped me a lot to watch it after reading your critique. It allowed me to focus my attention more on the things I had the most trouble with. I also looked at other official submissions along with your other critiques, it was very helpful too.

I didn't think about dividing the ant body in four parts but it seems so logical now. I really tried to stick to simple sausage forms while drawing the legs and the antennas but sometimes it was really hard, especially for long thin ones. The construction of the beetle horn made a lot more sense after following the recent lobster demo, even though it is a very different subject they share a very similar logic of construction.

Going through the exercise with your critique in mind was insanely useful. I would sincerely be happy to redo additional pages of insect if necessary.

Sorry for the late answer! I didn't see you posted your revisions.

The main thing you have to remember there is not to draw your ellipses more that 3 times. You can ghost them as long as you want, but when you start marking them on paper, only draw them 3 times max.

You actually tried the rotated boxes! That's good. I can see that you had the idea in mind when doing it. Your understanding of this exercise is going to improve immensely after finishing the 250 box challenge, don't worry.

I'm marking this lesson as complete, you can move on to the 250 box challenge.

    Have a nice day!

    Next Steps:

Re-use the exercises you've done in lesson 1 to warm up before each of your drawing session. I think you should warm up with the ellipses in planes exercise.

--> Don't forget to only draw your ellipses two or three times!

Good job! Your lesson look good! Here's my critique, I hope it will help:

    Superimposed lines:

Your superimposed lines look great! However, I think you were going a bit slowly when you where marking them since they look a bit wobbly. Don't forget to ghost your lines before drawing them, and when it's time to draw them, do it quickly! Accuracy is less important than confidence in this case.

    Ghosted lines:

It's the same case with your ghosted lines. They are too wobbly and they could have benefited from a more direct line. Ghost your line, prepare your arm, and mark the line in a single quick shot!

    Ghosted planes:

Your ghosted planes are great! Your issue with the precedent lines is less visible there but you still shouldn't forget that they have to be drawn quickly. Your ellipses look good but don't forget to draw them from 2-3 times, not more.

    Table of ellipses:

Your table of ellipses is nice, the ellipses are not drawn more than 3 times and that's good!

    Funnels:

When you're drawing your funnels, don't forget that there should be a sense of symmetry in them. The symmetry is present in most of the cases but there shouldn't be this big ellipse on the top of your page. The funnel should work like a mirror, your ellipses from one side should be the same as the ones from the other side.

    Rough perspective:

Don't forget that your VP should be on the horizon line. Your lines look good, don't try and correct them: many of the lines of your boxes look messy because you went over your lines with your pen to try and correct them and that's not a good idea. When you make a mistake, don't add more ink to it, it will only draw the attention to the mistake. Your perspectivee is gonna improve a lot when you're gonna do the 250 box challenge.

    Rotated boxes, organic boxes:

Impressive! The exercises look good, I don't have much to say about them. Just one thing: Don't try and correct your mistakes! Don't add more ink to them. If you make a mistake, just let it be.

    Next Steps:

Great job! I'm marking this lesson as complete. You can move on to the 250 boxes challenge.

Since I marked this lesson as complete, you can go critique other people's first lesson!

Your superimposed lines work well. They have a clear beginning and that's good. However, I think you could have done more curved lines because they all look alike so you haven't tried much diversity. You could also have tried to draw longer lines, it's a great exercise.

Your ghosted lines could be straighter, and I think you could have done way more of them. Don't hesitate to fill the whole page, it's gonna get particularly handy when you'll have to do warm-ups. If you only do several ghosted lines before your drawing session, you're not going to be warm enough to do the exercises.

The lines of your ghosted planes are way straighter so that's great! Furthermore, you've filled the whole page and that's a very good point. (I think this ghosted plane exercise is perfect for warmups, it prepares you to do straight lines, ellipses, forms... It's basically perfect for what you're gonna be asked to do in the next lessons.)

Your ellipses are clean. You have done them 2-3 times and that's very good. Your funnel exercise works pretty well too. I think your ellipses are your strong point.

Unfortunately, your lines in the rough perspective exercise are not straight enough. That's weird because they were way straighter when you tackled the ghosted plane exercise. Don't get overwhelmed by the idea of the box in 3d, drawing lines is always gonna remain drawing lines. Also, don't forget to ghost them a lot before actually drawing them.

Your rotated boxes exercise works pretty well too! Good job!

    Next Steps:

I'm marking this Lesson as complete. You can start the 250 box challenge.

First of all, I think you're using a blue ballpoint pen and you shouldn't. You should use a black fineliner with all the exercises (drawabox sells fineliners, they're great and pretty cheap if you live in the US).

You should be more careful about the beginning of your superimposed lines. They don't have a common beginning point and that's a problem. Your ghosted lines have a good trajectory but I don't think doing crosses instead of points is such a great choice. You should draw simple points and not crosses.

The lines of your ghosted planes could be straighter, don't forget to ghost your lines A LOT before marking the paper. The crosses are once again not such a great idea. It gives a messy feeling to the whole page. Furthermore, if you do crosses instead of points in the 250 boxes challenge, it's gonna be a problem. So remember, do small points instead of crosses.

Your ellipses are correct for the most part, however I think you've done to much ellipses sometimes. When you do an ellipse, you should do 2-3 ellipses, no more, no less. On the middle right of your ellipse there's an ellipse that has more than 3 "rounds" and that's a problem.

The vanishing point of your rough perspective is pretty respected, and I think it's gonna get way better as you push through the 250 boxes challenge.

Your rotated boxes exercise is well executed! I think it's a great idea to use the whole page to do the exercise rather than doing multiple pages.

    Next Steps:

I'm marking the lesson as complete but you should REALLY use a fineliner for the 250 box challenge and lesson 2, it's really important.

I didn't see I could reply to you!

I'm not going to waste your time since I don't have any questions, you were very clear in your critique. I just want to say thank you for answering so quick and being so precise in your response! I love the way you go straight to the point and it was exactly what I was hoping for.

    Have a great day!

This is my first feedback and english is not my native language so I hope you will be able to understand what I'm trying to say. I also want to add that I am going to be 100% honnest, I'm not gonna reply with empty comments because I don't think it's gonna help you improve.

First of all, you should think more about the beginning of your superimposed lines. They're lacking a clear beginning point and they shouldn't. Don't hesitate to ghost your lines a lot even with this exercise. In that regard, I think your second page of superimposed lines is way better, since you focused more on the beginning of the lines. Your understanding of the curved lines could have evolved a lot more if you tried to draw different positions. All your curved lines look the same and it's not ideal.

Your ghosted lines are a bit artificial and they could be way straighter. Once again, you should think more about the first point of your lines (it isn't crucial that your line ends specifically on the second point but it should at least start on the first.) I also think that you should draw more with the shoulder since your lines aren't very confident.

Your ghosted planes lines are way straighter and more confident than on the last exercise. However, your planes are often open, and that's a problem. Don't hesitate to push the line all the way through. Most of your ellipses are pretty good, but be careful of the ones that are a bit "spiky", they should be round not triangular.

Unfortunatly, I don't think your tables of ellipses are correct because your ellipses often float in the air. They should always follow a kind of rythme. I hope I'm not saying non-sense but I think you should redo a page of this exercise, trying to fit the ellipses into your lines. Try rereading the explanation of the exercise, it could help! And look at the examples uncomfortable provided us.

Your funnel exercise works pretty well, but I think you should have done more ellipses (you shouldn't do only one, you should always do at least 2 ellipses and maximum 3, like you did on the ghosted planes exercise).

The red lines in your rough perspective exercise shouldn't connect to the VP you tried to aim but they should continue the lines of your boxes. I don't think this is a huge mistake but you shouldn't forget that since it's the same idea with the 250 boxes challenge that you're gonna have to do after words.

Your rotated boxes exercise is unfortunately not correct. It is very hard exercise but you should try and tackle the challenge. I think you should re-read the exercise explanations and look at other students work. Don't lose hope, this exercise is REALLY hard but trying to surpass the huge challenges of this exercise is gonna help you to know what you should improve when you're doing the 250 boxes challenge!

I hope my critique will help you improve! I know it's harsh to ask you to redo exercises on the first lessons, but since I am not asking you to grind, I think it's really going to be beneficial. Good luck, and have a nice day!

    Next Steps:

You should redo one page of table of ellipses

You should try to do the rotated boxes exercise like Uncomfortable shows it (Don't aim for perfection, but try to do the exercise)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
