Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
12:10 PM, Wednesday March 16th 2022
Hi everyone I hope your all doing well, I just completed my Lesson 1 homework and I was hoping to get some feedback on it, any critique is welcomed.
Ok, I'm gonna be reviewing your work, and I'm gonna say this now. It is recommended that you use printer paper, not paper from a notebook. Now if you can't have any printer paper, you could take out the paper from the notebook and use that so that you can move it around and leave it on a flat surface. I'm assuming that the wobbliness on the lines are due to the paper being warped on the binder. I'm gonna ignore all of that, but make sure to get printer paper or take out the notebook paper so that it doesn't do this
Anyways, back to Lines :>
Lines
Your lines in Super Imposed Lines look pretty good, but there are some fraying on both ends on some of the lines. I really can't tell but make sure you pay attention to where you put your pen when doing this excercise
Ok, this is where I'm gonna be rough, in Ghosting Lines the lines are arched. This is a problem as it shows that you might be using something other than your shoulder. This can be fixed by hovering your elbow over the table and not resting it on anything.
Overall, all the lines aren't the best, as they arc, but this can be fixed as you go on the rest of the lessons.
Ellipses
In Table of Ellipses, your ellipses are pretty outside the boundaries. Try to keep it in without it going outside that much, even if its a tiny bit outside.
You did draw your ellipses the recommended 2-3 times so good job, but...
With Ellipses in Planes the ellipses should touch the sides of the planes, some of the ellipses you drew was in one attempt, now that could be because its blurry, but it seems like it.
In the Funnels, the ellipses in some are not centered to the minor axis, and some are not overshooting the boundaries and some are undershot.
Overall, the ellipses should be focused on the most, as most are outside or to small in the boundaries they are in, this needs to be looked at more.
Boxes
In Plotted Perspective, you did a pretty good job, although I think you missed one of the boxes hatching, and that some look wobbly (again with the binder of the notebook).
In Rough Perspective, it is also pretty good, but the lines are wobbly, going back to the lines exercise, every line has to be ghosted to get smooth and precise lines, I did this before without looking back, and now see the importance of it.
Now, for Rotated Boxes, this is the hardest exercise and it doesn't seem like you preformed it well. I will be lighter in this as this is where beginner struggle, but the boxes should look like a sorta globe. The corner boxes aren't following the vanishing of the boxes on the x and y axis, it just looks parallel. Don't be afraid to copy from the lessons, it can help try to understand how boxes work.
In Organic Perspective, they look pretty good, the boxes are on the line and the boxes look like they are coming through a window.
Overall, there are some revisions that is needed.
Next Steps:
1 Page of Funnels
1 Page of Rotated Boxes
Hi, thank you so much for giving me your honest critique it's really helped to show me what I've been doing wrong when attempting these exercises. I did those revisions you assigned to me.

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
