A quick Google search revealed to me today that, in the game of chess, prompting a pawn to a queen is known as “queening”.

In informal chess games, an additional queen to the game can be indicated by placing two pawns in the same square if you don’t have another queen piece to use instead.

Pawns are based on people like pikemen.

Put all of these little factoids together, and you get this drawing from me today.

Based on the Drawabox prompt, “The Court of the Rat King”, during its Autumn Promptathon 2023.

Reference used.

(How can I not use such a fun word as “queening”?)

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
