I'm glad you're going to work on your patience:)

Good luck with the 250 box challenge! If you want me to critique it (once you have completed it), you can always ask!

    Hi SirColten,

I'm glad the critique was helpful! Once you complete lesson 2 you can either @ me on discord (I suggest you get it if you don't have it, it's especially useful in the later lessons!) or you can also just reply to me here if you don't wanna use discord.

I'm glad you're going to attempt lineweight on some of the boxes (as this will be brought up countless times during the course). Good luck with lesson 2 :)

Hi Pab, your lines may be curving but they aren't wobbly anymore:) You're using the correct technique (trying to curve the arch the opposite way to make up for it). With practice you'll definitely improve! You've also done the shading correctly on the rotated boxes exercise.

I've marked your lesson as complete.

Hi NoahDrakeHolguin, I'll be critiquing your submission.

    Lines

Your lines in the first exercise look great! Though a few of them are a bit wobbly so I suggest you try to remember to draw from your shoulder and draw the lines without hesistation. Fraying at the ends isn't a problem, as you will improve this naturally just by practicing!

The lines in the ghosted lines and the ghosted planes exercise are executed well!

    Ellipses

You did well on the ellipses in the ellipses in tables exercise. You've drawn through them twice which is good:) Although some of them could have fit a bit more snugly.

The ellipses in planes look great (some are a bit wobbly though, remember to ghost them)!

The funnels exercise is executed well, you have rotated the ellipses too, but looks like the ink in your pen was running out.

    Boxes

You extended the lines to the horizon in the rough perspective exercise which is good.

You didn't complete the rotated boxes exercise, so I'll have you redo it. Remember this exercise was supposed to be hard so don't worry if it doesn't turn out perfect!

The organic perspective exercise turned out well! But use the same pen throughout the exercise.

Also another comment: Try to submit the pictures in chronological order (it makes it easier to give feedback)!:)

    Next Steps:

    Complete the rotated boxes exercise

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi Hymnodi, I'll be critiquing your submission.

    Lines

You've generally drawn the lines in the first exercise well but a few of them are slightly wobbly. Remember to draw from your shoulder and draw the lines without hesistation. Fraying at the ends isn't a problem, as you will improve this naturally just by practicing.

The lines in the ghosted lines and the ghosted planes exercise are also slightly wobbly. Other than that you've done well!

    Ellipses

You drew the ellipses well on the ellipses in tables exercise! Most of them fit snugly in the tables and you've drawn through them twice which is good! There are a few outliers though.

The ellipses in planes are executed well :)

The funnels exercise looks good. You have rotated the ellipses and most of them fit snugly in the funnels (to improve I would suggest you ghost them more).

    Boxes

You extended the lines to the horizon in the rough perspective exercise which is great (a lot of people forget that)!

The rotated boxes exercise looks good (if you wanna improve I suggest working on symmetry). This exercise was supposed to be hard so don't worry if it didn't turn out perfect. The organic perspective exercise also turned out well.

Comment: Try to submit the pictures in chronological order (it makes it easier to give feedback)!

    Congratulations on completing lesson 1:)

Hi Pab, I'll be critiquing your submission.

    Lines

Your lines in the first exercise are a bit wobbly so try to draw form your shoulder and draw the lines without hesistation. I'll have you redo this exercise (1 page). Remember that fraying at the ends isn't a problem, as you will improve this naturally just by practicing!

The lines in the ghosted lines and the ghosted planes exercise are a bit less wobbly:)

    Ellipses

You did a great job on the ellipses in the ellipses in tables exercise! They fit snugly in the tables and you've drawn through them twice which is great!

Some of the ellipses in planes are a tiny bit wobbly but other than that you've done a good job.

The funnels exercise is executed well, you have rotated the ellipses and they fit snugly in the funnels!

    Boxes

You remembered to extend the lines to the horizon in the rough perspective exercise which is great.

You executed the rotated boxes exercise really well! Though I suggest you add the shading to this exercise. The organic perspective exercise turned out well!

    Next Steps:

1 page of the first exercise (and add shading to the rotated boxes exercise)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hi SirColten,

    I'll be critiquing your submission:)

Before I get to the critique I just wanted to suggest that you number your boxes/cylinders etc in the challenges because it will make it easier to give critique (you can keep this in mind when you start the cylinder challenge later on in the course).

    Extending lines

On some of the earlier boxes you have drawn the extending lines in the wrong direction (the lines should always extend away from the center dot of the Y). But in the later boxes you have learnt to extend them correctly:) Good job!

    Divergences and parallel lines

In 3 point perspective the lines of the boxes will always converge. It's worth noting that they can never diverge or be parallel. In a lot of your boxes the lines are diverging, so keep in mind that they should instead always be converging!

Even if it's really hard to notice, the convergence should still be there: https://imgur.com/mWLlnYl (ignore the cylinder in this demographic).

    Hatching lines

You've done a good job drawing the hatching lines on the faces of the boxes.

    Lineweight

I would suggest you practice lineweight on some of your boxes (if you want you can reply to this message with a screenshot once you've practiced doing the line weight on some of the boxes). The lineweight should only be added to the contour of the boxes, and with just one single superimposed line.

Line quality and the inner corner

Your lines aren't wobbly, they look confident and accurate. And generally you've done a good job at drawing the inner corners of the boxes.

    Final comments:

Make sure to add line weight and remember that the lines should always be converging.

Here is a diagram I think could be useful to you:)

Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
