    All good!

Thanks so much; have fun with your art as well :)

    Hi there!

These boxes feel a little sub-par, but I tried to focus on neater hatching and single-line line weight.

    Here's the link: https://imgur.com/a/OkM1hMw

Thanks a bunch for your time! Let me know if there's anything else I should do.

    Lots better!

    I don't have any more comments :)

Thanks for doing them over, and sorry I replied a bit late.

Unfortunately, I'm not licensed to look at your 250 boxes submission, because I haven't finished mine XD

Good luck with lesson 2 (assuming someone approves you) :)

    Next Steps:

    250 boxes! Which you have completed, so...Lesson 2 :)

I recommend making sure someone looks over your boxes before you proceed, though.

180 in two weeks? There's no way that's too slow, haha

Take your time, don't worry about it, :)

Also, if fineliners are too expensive, it's still your choice whether you use them or not; since there's nobody to really enforce the rules. They're just highly recommended.

    Good luck with your boxes!

    Hi there!

I'm sorry you had to wait a while for a critique. I see that you're using ballpoint, but do keep in mind fineliner is required after the 250 box challenge. It's also recommended you use copy paper if you can. In the future, please try to keep your submissions in order and avoid drawing on top of your assignments. I also see that you often do extra pages for assignments - remember not to grind and only complete the recommended amount of pages.

    Lines:

    • I'm assuming the last image is your superimposed lines. It's okay to have overlapping lines, but try to keep it clear enough that each line can be seen. I'm seeing some wobbling, and fraying on both ends of your lines; so try and draw confidently and take the time to align your pen to the start point of the line. And don't forget to do a couple of curved lines :)

    • Ghosted lines are straight, which is nice! Make sure not to correct lines, ie, draw another line over a line you draw because the first one was "bad"

    • Ghosted Planes are good; try to arrange them so that you can fit more planes on the page. Otherwise, all your lines are straight, and you did a good job plotting the points for the bisection lines.

    Ellipses:

    • It looks like you might've missed some instructions for your Table of Ellipses, but your ellipses are smooth and you draw through them. Try and work on keeping them tight and touching boundaries when you do warm-ups in the future. Also, please don't add extra scribbles or drawings on top of exercises, it makes it a bit hard to see. Additionally, part of the exercise is to add extra boundaries, ie drawing a wave through the sections: https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/11/step3

      • Since you missed that, I'm going to ask you to redo a quick page, but don't worry, it's not because your ellipses are bad, we just want to fully complete the exercise
    • Ellipses in Planes is great! No problems there, just remember not to draw through ellipses more than three times.

    • Funnels are good as well.

    Boxes:

    • Plotted Perspective is good, but make sure that lines meant to be perpendicular and parallel to the horizon line aren't tilted at a weird angle.

    • Good plotted perspective. Make sure not to correct lines, again.

    • Organic Perspective is good as well! Nothing that hasn't been said.

    • Good Rotated Boxes, you'll work on that more in the 250 box challenge.

Again, make sure not to grind, and to keep your pages clean. After you get a page of Table of Ellipses done, you can move on to the 250 box challenge :)

    Next Steps:

1 page of Table of Ellipses

After that, you're all good to go for the 250 box challenge :)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi there! I like your username :)

    Good work on Lesson 1.

    Lines:

    • Superimposed lines look good. You do a good job of aligning your pen to the start of the line so that there's only fraying on one end, which will get better as you go on.

    • Ghosted lines are good as well, your lines are straight and confident most of the time. A bit of overshooting, which isn't a big deal, but it can help if you lift your pen when it hits the end point of the line.

    • Ghosted Planes seem good, no issues there.

      Ellipses:

    • Table of Ellipses is good as well. Your ellipses are smooth for the most part. Sometimes they can be a bit wobbly, so make sure you keep your lines smooth and confident. Ghosting more can also help.

    • Ellipses are smoother in the Ellipses in Planes exercise, good work.

    • Good job aligning your ellipses to the minor axis in your funnels exercise. You have a bit of room for more ellipses in your funnels.

      Boxes:

    • Plotted Perspective is great! No issues there.

    • Rough Perspective is fine as well. I see that you corrected your line once, so remember that once you draw a line, you shouldn't correct it by drawing another line over it. Try and resist the urge to correct lines :)

    • No major issues with your rotated boxes. They'll look better as we do the 250 box challenge.

    • Nice Organic Perspective. Again, try not to correct your lines, but otherwise, no major issues there.

Good work! You're all good to go for the 250 box challenge.

I suggest you practice ellipses for your warm-ups and do your best to keep them smooth, but you seem to have that down, so don't overdo it.

    Next Steps:

    250 box challenge!

Remember to revisit Lesson 1 exercises for warm-up, and have fun! :)

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
