I was a little inconsistent with these exercises in terms of timing, with the 1st super imposed line page being finished on December, and the 2nd page of the organic perspective being finished around May. I drew for fun a lot in between during this time.

Hello Ethan, firstly congratulations on finishing Lesson one.

Now lets have a look at your attempt.

Lines:

Most of your superimposed lines are not fraying that much at beginning which is nice, but some are, so do take care of it by slowing down a little and properly planning your mark. Further we can see a little bit of wobbling going on in them, which again, reflects either hesitation, not using shoulder as pivot or going too slow, do not worry for now, they are difficult to get used to beginning so do try to take care of that in your future deliberate warmups and they will improve over time along with your accuracy which will lead to less fraying at end as well. Also do go through this one more time to see how you can tackle your wobbling issues correctly.

Your ghosted lines have proper start and end marks, and most of your lines are confident as well, but we still can see the wobbling issues as mentioned earlier and do not worry about accuracy at end point for now as well.

In your ghosted planes exercise we can already see improvement in wobbling of lines, you have confident strokes here so kudos for that. Now, let me point out something here, you should always mark your starting and end points(dots) in these sort of mark making, we can see you have not marked those for the lines going through inside the planes, we are aiming for proper intentional marks here and not arbitrary strokes, so do take care of that.

Ellipses:

Apart from things mentioned above: In your table of ellipses, you have done good job of having confident strokes, drawing through more than once and keeping the angles and degrees of ellipses same in single sections, for most part, so kudos. But we can see slight wobble and distortions here and there, so let me remind you that our main objective for now is to have a smooth round and confident ellipses. So do take care of that by ghosting properly and using shoulders.

Same thing for your funnels exercise, also in here we can see that the minor axis(the middle line) is either not in middle at all for some funnels, and in those in which it is, some ellipses are not being bisected equally. It is difficult at first, do not worry, the accuracy will build up over time with deliberate practice, so do take care of this as well.

Apart from things mentioned earlier, your ellipses have better confident strokes in here so kudos.

Boxes:

The boxes are difficult at first, so again kudos for attending them nonetheless.

Your Plotted Perspective is done nicely.

In your Rough Perspective, you have taken good care to keep the width parallel to the horizon and the height perpendicular which is yet again a good point. And again, not to worry about accuracy that much right now. Though let me point this out, as seen in one box that you have drawn over a line in order to correct its inital trajectory, do take care, no matter how off the trajectory the inital mark is, do not correct it, treat it as intended mark and move on with that.

Your rotated boxes, it turned out pretty well. You also did a good job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps consistent. While the rotations here aren't perfect still this was a good effort overall. The more you draw and develop your spatial thinking ability the easier these rotations are to handle. This is a great exercise to come back to after a few lessons or the boxes challenge to see how much your spatial thinking ability has improved.

Finally the organic perspective, besides the points mentioned earlier, it is a nice attempt, and kudos for finishing the lesson there. But again, we can see correcting marks in here, and I will also just add this regarding lineweights "Lineweight should be added with confident ghosted lines, and solely to the part of lines to overlap, not to whole lines." for future reference.

With that said, your attempt was decent! But it seems you have to work a little bit on that wobbliness of lines and ellipses(the small ellipses to be precise), do keep the aforementioned points in mind and do not hesitate to revisit the lesson, read the text and watch videos to see what is the real cause of wobbliness and how to tackle that. Good luck.

Next Steps:

I would ask you to go through the section of the lesson again regarding confident and smooth lines and ellipses. And then try to attempt:

  • One page filled with Ellipses in planes exercise.

Good luck and my best wishes. Make sure to focus on confident lines and smoothness of lines and ellipses over anything else and also by keeping the accuracy as your secondary priority over confidence and smoothness.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello, sorry that I delayed on this, but I went through the confident lines again and redid the Ellipses in planes exercise. Again, thank you so much for your feedback, i really appreciate it!

Hello, and a splendid work, the lines and ellipses are confident! My best wishes for your journey now, and all I can say is, 250 boxes will take time, but it is a great opportunity to set a schedule for your art sessions, a dedicated time frame not only helps us stay consistent but also makes the day less chaotic haha(coming from personal experience), and it will benefit for future lessons as well. Good luck.

Next Steps:

Congratulations, now you can move towards the famous 250 box challenge.

Some points before moving on:

  • Do regular warmups, they do wonders, even if you think you won't be able to draw much, then also try to squeeze atleast five minutes per day for warmup, while keeping the aforementioned points in mind for your exercises.

  • Do not hesitate to revisit lesson zero, or the lesson texts and videos if you have questions or want to recall about the exercises and warmups.

  • Do follow the fifty percent rule, you might enjoy it or you might not even feel like doing it but do it nonetheless, you will appreciate its value over time.

  • Do not isolate, regularly post your updates in the appropriate section or the appropriate lesson channels on discord to get feedback on the work in progress.

  • And to take good care of your health and sleep(This is the most improtant one in my opinion).

My best wishes for your future endeavours, have great time.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
