Should i consider holes and cracks on the surface or only focus on cast shadows?

Cracks and holes are the spaces between the forms, which cast the shadows. They shouldn't be ignored, but instead of focusing on the holes/cracks themselves, you should be focusing on how the forms that surround them cast shadows into them. Those forms also have side planes, which form the walls around the cracks and holes, which shadows (and light) fall upon. Just filling in holes/cracks with black would be incorrect, because it would ignore the areas that light is able to shine upon.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
