Hi Draw A Box instructors! This is my first time ever doing this curriculum. I have been drawing almost everyday for close to 3 months. I have always struggled with spacial recognition, so I'm hoping this course gives me the knowledge I lack. Thank you for the critique as well!!!

Congratulations on completing lesson 1! You did a really good job overall and I can see you made a lot of progress by the end of the lesson.

Starting with your super-imposed lines you did a good job of pushing through and making fairly straight looking lines. With your ghosted lines you show a little bit more hesitation here and there is just a bit of wobble to your lines. However, in your planes you do a good job of correcting that and your lines become much straighter and more confident looking overall.

For your tables of ellipses you drew through all of your ellipses correctly and I can see you put a lot of time and care into constructing them. I can see that in many of your ellipses you have some wobbling. Just remember that the confidence of the stroke is far and away your top priority. Accuracy is something that you will improve on as you continue working through Drawabox and practice ghosting. So when you go to make your ellipses be sure you are using the ghosting method for them the same way you do your straight lines. In your ellipses in planes you start to draw your ellipses with more confidence and they have a nice round, more confident looking shape. Lastly for this section is your funnels. Your ellipses here look even smoother than before and I can see you made a lot of good progress here. I would recommend that you stick to drawing through your ellipses two times only in the future. There are a few instances throughout this section where I can see that you drew through your ellipses too many times. When you draw through your ellipses too many times you can lose track of which specific ellipses you are meant to draw and this can cause your ellipses to break apart and appear less cohesive. So for now, stick to two.

You did a pretty good job with your rough perspective homework. I can see you were careful when placing your boxes. Your horizontal lines stay fairly parallel with the horizon and your vertical lines perpendicular. Your boxes also manage to converge on or near their plotted vanishing points. Good job! You do start to hesitate again in parts of your construction here. Keep in mind as you progress through Drawabox and begin to construct more complex forms that it is important to put in the time and focus required to execute each line correctly and to apply the ghosting method to every step of the process, as explained here.

The rotated boxes exercise is a challenging and complex assignment. You did pretty well for your first attempt! Your lines are looking more confident and most of your boxes and constructed correctly. I do see that you didn't draw through all of your boxes correctly, as shown here. Just keep in mind what I said before about taking your time and thinking through every step of your construction. You also didn't quite get your boxes to rotate along the major axes, as shown here. Your boxes do show a good bit of improvement from the previous exercise. Just keep in mind what I said above and make sure you check out all the links I have left you.

Finally with your organic perspective boxes I can see some room for improvement with getting your sets of parallel lines to converge more consistently towards their shared vanishing points. That is something you will work on more in the next steps.

Congrats again on completing lesson 1 and good luck with the 250 Box Challenge!

Thank you so much! I read all of your links and read your reply twice. I definitely agree.

I have a hard time ghosting ellipses and then trying to draw it without wobble. I can't really envision the type of ellipse I am trying to make until I have already started. Sometimes the way I held my pen interfered with the smoothness of the stroke, too, so I am trying to get used to that as well. Maybe more muscle memory and practice will help me in that aspect. The more ellipses I had drawn, the easier it became to create ones that were more confident looking.

The boxes were by far the hardest. It was hard to focus on each individual line while keeping in mind the big picture of creating a box. Hopefully the 250 box challenge will help me out a lot and I will try to put more intent into my lines moving forward. Thank you again!!!

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
