Everyone keeps telling you that you need to practice your fundamentals. ...

I completed Lesson 1, but I still am very confused about rotating a box and tilting horizon line.

Hey welcome to Drawabox!

Congrats on completing lesson 1 and well done on the exercises! You've done a great job across the exercises. Starting off, the lines are smooth and confidently executed, the ellipses are also looking fine though I see you have some minor issues when it comes to the smaller ones in both the tables and funnels. Remember that whilst our shoulders are good for drawing long, sweeping lines, it's ok to use our wrists and elbows to make smaller marks. Although most of lesson 1 requires using our shoulders it is ok to alternate depending on what best fits the situation, and as usual, use the ghosting technique.

Now for the boxes, your linework is looking nice and neat (give yourself a pat on the back). For the rough perspective exercise, you don't need to draw the extension lines past the horizon line, just to the horizon and stopping is enough. Some of the larger boxes on the organic boxes exercise are diverging a little at the corners but nothing major.

Well done on finishing lesson 1, you're ready for the 250 box challenge! (It looks like someone's answered your question which ended up leading me here, the discord is quite active so feel free to drop by). All the best!

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
