Hi there! Congratulations on finishing Lesson 1, that's a huge step! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.

Lines

  • Overall, your lines are starting to gain confidence. I can tell that you strived for confidence over accuracy, so that's good, even if some lines came off kind of wobbly.

  • It's good that you tried different curves on superimposed lines. Fraying was only on one of two sides, so that's good too.

  • Other positive points: your lines usually don't arch, you plotted the points for all of them and you didn't repeat them when they were off.

Ellipses

  • In this section is what I believe it's your biggest problem of this lesson. Your ellipses are most wobbling, they lack confidence and smoothness AND accuracy.

  • On ellipse tables, you generally fall short and ellipses do not reach the bounds and they overlap with each other. I kind of get the sense they are made in a hurry, not taking the time to properly ghost them to plot them confidently and smooth. Sometimes you drew through them more than 2 or 3 times.

  • On funnels, you forgot to draw the arches in most of them (or did you? I cant' tell from the scanning). Remember that the goal of the excercise is to draw ellipses that fit between the arches while being bisected by the minor axis.

Boxes

  • I think this is a good first approach at perspective. Even though on rough perspective width lines should be (and in your work sometimes are not) parallel to horizon, and height lines should be (and in your work sometimes are not) perpendicular to horizon, I believe it's a decent outcome. This is a hard task, but it's good to keep in mind so you can get better at it.

  • On rotated boxes, some boxes aren't rotating. Check this out: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg.

  • Nothing to add to organic perspective, good job.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is very decent work. As I already told you, I think that your biggest issue is with ellipses, so I will reccomend a revision before marking this as complete. However, there is something I wanted to bring to the table: from your commentaries and dates on the pages it's been almost a year since you made these excercises. I will just ask for some revisions here, but unless you are very confident with the concepts you have grasped over a year ago, please consider going over all of the excercises, as it will refresh the skills you already attained. But this is up to you.

Next Steps:

I will ask for the following revisions:

  • one page of table of ellipses

  • one page of funnel ellipses

  • one page of ghosted planes with ellipses

Just submit these in the reply and I will mark this lesson as complete so you can go on to 250 Box Challenge.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you for the wonderfully well-written critique! I'll be sure to go over the previous exercises. Regardless, here are the revisions; https://imgur.com/a/P6ngh7h

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
