The homework takes as long as it takes, and likely more than a day. You should work through it in order, reading/listening to the lessons then doing the exercises as they arise. That means finishing all of the lines section before moving on to ellipses.

The previously completed exercises should be used as short warmups you do before each session.

About the warm-ups . . . Uncomfortable mentioned in another discussion that the exercises for Lesson 1 should only be used for warm-ups once you've submitted your work for Lesson 1 and have received feedback. Until then, warm-ups aren't required. So Lesson 1's exercises would become your warm-ups once you begin Lesson 2, and the exercises for Lessons 1 and 2 will become your warm-ups once you begin Lesson 3.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
