I did it! I felt like quitting multiple times but I did it. x)

Two things I would like to add because it's not apparent in the drawings:

  • I was able to speed up the process for drawing each box. In the first few pages, I needed about 2 minutes to draw one box whereas in the end, it only took me about 30 seconds per box.

  • During the exercise, I didn't always have the best setting. Partially, I had to draw the boxes on my lap but I still think they turned out well enough for free-hand drawing.

What I will take away from this exercise myself:

  • I have to take care to let the first tree lines for one VP meet even when farther away.

  • I have to draw each line as straight as possible. I see a slight curvature in some places to meet the endpoint instead of drawing a perfectly straight line.

  • Filling out one side of the box showed me that I also have to take care for the simple start-stop exercise to draw each parallel line from border to border without lifting off too soon or overshooting.

I appreciate any feedback you might have.

You did a pretty good job, but I didn't see many boxes with drastic foreshortening.

I could see some divergence in a few of your boxes but it was more the exception than the rule.

Can I ask you why you didn't add any line weight on the external edges? It would have also made the curvature problem clearer to tackle while also giving you an opportunity for further growth!

Overall I think you have consolidated your understanding of 3d space and you can take the next step on your Drawabox journey!!

Go onto Lesson 2, good luck!

Hey Restlegless - I had to read your name multiple times, so goal achieved =]

The drastic foreshortening went really well each time I did it, so I focused on the more challenging distances.

Missed opportunity on the line weight, you are right! I will take it on my ToDo for future exercises to also include it.

Thank you very much for your critique and encouragment. I am looking forward to lesson 2. :D

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
