Hey FURIOUSPAN

Phobic here again. i just took a look at your re-do for your ghosted lines and although there is still a bit of wobbling these look much more neat and confident so congrats.

hopefully the advice i have offered here will be of some assistance to you in your journey through 250 boxes and your warm ups in future. with this in mind i will mark this as complete congratulations!

Next Steps:

Revisions complete and ready to start 250 box challenge

Hi FURIOUSPAN my name is Phobic and i will be giving critique today.

For the structure of this critique i will divide it into three sections LINES, ELIPSES AND BOXES with each going into what i think you did well, what i think may need a bit of work and next steps. this is my first critique so appologies if i slip up anywhere. with that in mind lets get into this.

LINES SECTION:

Super Imposed Lines:

So for the super imposed lines i think you did a pretty good job for a first go around as there is very minimal fraying at the start of each row which can be pretty tough to achieve so well done. with that said there is quite a bit of wobbling in the lines which you may want to watch out for when attempting this exercise in future although im presuming this is because of a lack of ghosting which is formally introduced in the next exercise.

Ghosted Lines:

From what i can see you have done well with the ghosted lines exercise as the lines appear to have been drawn very confidently using the ghosting method. with that said i noticed on a couple of lines they appeared to curve perhaps as a slip of the hand and i also noticed that some of the lines curving slightly but this is normal when starting and is just a little something to keep in mind for future. (See ghosted lines lesson page for more details on this under the arching lines section)

Ghosted Planes:

For the ghosted planes exercise you have done well to create a wide variety of different planes in different angles and orientations as this can be quite tricky at times (or maybe just for me haha). However i noticed some issues with these ghosted planes namley there is alot of wobbling in your lines which suggests to me the planes may have been rushed, may have had difficulty ghosting your lines, or may have drawn your lines too slowly. i would advise you to re-attempt this exercise in future warm ups taking care to rotate the page and try different speeds when ghosing your lines. as an additional note i noticed on a couple of your planes you had drawn through a line several times however it is advisable not to draw over your lines and continue onwards with the exercise.

ELIPSES SECTION:

Table of elipses:

I feel that looking at your elipses you have made a good start. its very clear to me looking at these elipses that they have been ghosted and drawn through twice confidently. however for many elipses in the table the elipses are quite spread appart and are not connected at the sides and also do not line up on the minor axis. that being said though this is still a good start and this can be cleaned up over time by doing a small portion of this task in your warm up exercises.

Ghosted Planes:

For this exercise i would first of all like to praise you for re-drawing the planes before drawing in your elipses as this can be quite time consuming. as for general critique i feel the same points from the ghosted planes exercise applies here as the planes are still quite wobbly. as for the elipses i feel these are quite good as these clearly showcase confidence and drawing through your lines.

Elipses in funnels:

I feel these are quite good for the previously stated reasons. you have done a great job packing the elipses close together and keeping them alligned on a minor axis. my only critique here is there are some small gaps between your elipses in some of the funnels which can be rectified with some practice so no worries there.

BOXES SECTION (THE FINAL BOSS OF LESSON 1)

Plotted Perspective:

The boxes look very neat with them all going back to the Vanishing point with minimal distortion. no issues here.

Rough Perspective:

I feel very similarly to the ghosted planes exercise the lines are incredibly wobbly. there is also a bit of divergence in some of your boxes with the lines moving further away from one another but this will most likely be worked out in the 250 box challenge so no worries here.

Rotated Boxes:

For the rotated boxes for a first attempt you have done very well. the boxes appear to rotate correctly and the outer faces look quite good. there appears to be some wobbling on some of your inside faces on the box but this can be worked on. one thing i will point out however is you appear to have not finished this exercise as there seems to still be some empty spots on the top and bottom which suggests you may have forgotten to finish the task. that being said however it looks good.

Organic Perspective (The last one WOO!)

I dont have too much to say about this one other than well done haha. the boxes look pretty good as they rotate pretty well and the perspective looks decent so well done. my only concern however is line wobbling but we will get into this in my closing statement.

Closing Statement:

Overall i feel you have done quite well with lesson 1 especially with the tricky bits like boxes and elipses (i really struggled during these) however with that being said i noticed quite consistently throughout the submission that your lines were quite wobbly. before i can approve this lesson for a pass i would like to request a re-do of one page of ghosted planes. i would ask for more but the 250 box challenge will probably help your boxes alot and my main concern is your lines as everything else seemed solid.

I would like to say again though you have done quite well and you are nearly there with lesson 1 don't give up!

Next Steps:

1 page of ghosted elipses to help clean up wobbly lines.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi Phobic thanks for the critique ^^ which seems really professional. Glad i'm going into the right direction. Yes wobbly lines AAAA. They were even wobblier in the ghosted planes and rough perspective exercises because i tried to draw them with hover-hand. Later i was drawing with the hand on paper and occasionally hover-hand to make a habit. I was really careful with this one so with mainly hand on paper. Oh and rotated boxes, i know this now since i saw the example. i was rotating first boxes too much so later boxes were hard to fit in and very warped(also i draw this too small). if i would draw the rest of the boxes they would be barely visible and very distorted(i think). It was my third attempt to this exercise so i decided to stop grinding it and do it after the mighty 250 BOXES CHALLANGEEEE!!!

I hope i made this good (it could been better imo)

Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
