Hello there. Some pages seem to be missing? Remember that to get a critique you're supposed do to every exercise in the number of pages required. Also, you forgot to plot your lines back to the horizon line on page 2 of your rough perspective.

Remember: here are all the assignments you're meant to do:

  • 2 Pages of Super Imposed Lines

  • 1 Page of Ghosted Lines

  • 2 Pages of Ghosted Planes

  • 2 Pages of Tables of Ellipses

  • 2 Pages of Ellipses in Planes

  • 1 Page of Funnels

  • 1 Page of Plotted Perspective

  • 2 Pages of Rough Perspective

  • 1 Page of Rotated Boxes

  • 2 Pages of Organic Perspective

Good luck!

Hi LUCKLESSTYCHE,

I have taken a look at your lesson 1 results and will share my observations.

Lines Section

I have seen you draw confident lines, which is more important than accuracy. Also if accuracy is not first priority there are many lines on page 2 which are not hitting one of both dots. The line should never miss the starting dot, because that's the point where you start tipping the paper for drawing the line. You can alway miss the target point with over or undershooting, but there is no obvious reason to miss the starting point. On page 1 you did it :-).

Ellipses

All ellipses are drawn through 2 to 3 times, which is perfect. Most ellipses are drawn confident, only some have wobbly lines that's good. The weakest point I can observe is accuracy. The ellipses should be kept within the bounds, each ellipse touching each other, without overlapping. This criteria is only matching few of the ellipses. I recommend to invest more time in ghosting the ellipses before putting the pen to the paper. Ghosting method works for ellipses as well as for lines. On funnels lesson the most ellipses are cut in 2 symmetrical halves, which is good. Also in the funnels section accuracy of touching and bounds is the weakest point.

Boxes

All the boxes are drawn through boxes, except on the organic perspective, which is perfect. It seems like you forgot to "Using a ruler, take all of your depth lines and extend them to where they intersect with the horizon." on second rough perspective page. That's something you still have to do, to verify your results yourself. Rotated Boxes exercise looks good to me! I know it's a tough one.

Best,

Neuromancer

On rough perspective, use the line correction method, for the second page as well and you are done.

Thanks for your feedback, I added the lines on rough perspective. Can I just pass the 250 box challenge and start directly from the lesson 2? I was doing it but it's gonna take so much time. I drew 25 boxes only.

AMINE2 mentioned in the comment above some of your exercies pages are missing. Can't tell you if you haven't done it yet or if you had trouble with Imgur.

2 Pages of Super Imposed Lines -> Second Page is missing (TODO)

1 Page of Ghosted Lines -> check

2 Pages of Ghosted Planes -> check

2 Pages of Tables of Ellipses -> check

2 Pages of Ellipses in Planes -> check

1 Page of Funnels -> check

1 Page of Plotted Perspective -> check

2 Pages of Rough Perspective -> "I added the lines on rough perspective"... I can't see it on Imgur (TODO)

1 Page of Rotated Boxes -> check

2 Pages of Organic Perspective -> check

As I can only review things which I can see, I can't approve Lesson 1 right now.

Regarding your question....

"Can I just pass the 250 box challenge and start directly from the lesson 2?"

You can do what you want. You can skip all lessons and go directly to lesson 7, no one will stop you and if you are convinced it's the best for you, do it. If you do so, you will leave the drawabox philosophy and you will not complete this course. The 250 box challenge is there for a reason and it will give you some "Milage" in training perspective. Your question is like a person who want learn to climb on a high mountain and second exercise is to climb 250 times a wall. You tell your coach "I did it only 25 times, because it's so exhausting, can I directly go to the mountain?"

I don't recommend to skip any exercise, but it's up to you.

As a reference I have drawn 6 Boxes a day, which means 42 days of drawing to pass the 250 box challenge. I haven't drawn every day and not every day boxes, so it took me 3 months to pass.

If you want to pass Lesson 1, please upload second page of superimposed lines and show me the mentioned "I added the lines on rough perspective".

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
