Couple things to note:

  • To understand where my lines were stopping and starting, I circled the starting points during the Ghosted Lines page

  • I did a page of funnels and realized I had missed part of the instructions, hence why the page says "Funnels 2"

  • It was also during the funnels page that I got my hands on some new and better pens, which I took the opportunity to try out

  • The rotated boxes are so much smaller than I thought they'd turn out. I guess realizing that is part of the spacial reasoning we're trying to develop

  • If I messed up on any of the instructions please let me know

Hope everyone's working hard and enjoying the journey.

Hello, sethdotcomic!

Your work is great and here are my observations:-

1• Your superimposed lines exercise looks great: the lines are smooth, confident. They don't fray at both ends, you did 2 pages and the lengths are different. You did all that you were asked, good job.

2• Your ghosted lines are also good, confident, smooth, almost accurate, they do arc at the beginning but I see you improved.Great!

3• In ghosted planes exercises you keep the good work with your lines, no remarks. Good job!

4• Your Ellipses exercise also shows effort: ellipses are almost smooth, planned, and you draw through them several times.

5• !!!! Your Ellipses in planes exercise might need a little improvement :

• Your eclipses shouldn’t be deformed which in your I see a lot!!

Maintaining a smooth elliptical shape is critical and above all else is your first priority.

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/deformed

6• !!! Again in your funnels exercise your eclipses aren’t smooth and

there are some other things you need to work on:

*The eclipses must align to the minor axis.

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/14/notaligned

*The eclipses should be thinner in the middle and should become thicker as they move outwards

7• In your plotted perspective exercise all the lines are drawn correctly, good job!

8• Your rough perspective exercise looks nice: line work is good (could be done better) , I see quite an improvement with the lines converging to the VP on the second page. Good job.

9• Your rotated boxes exercise is mostly decent: you rotate the boxes nicely, the lines are confident and smooth . Great!!

10• In organic perspective exercise you did a good job and the line work is better.

Note:-

The purpose of these exercises (all of them) is that you try to force yourself to really think about your lines a lot, to plan them, and only then to draw them .So I recommend you spend more time while ghosting and then draw yours lines/eclipses.

All in all, I do think you should redo your funnels exercise (at least one page )..

And then proceed to 250 box challenge !!

You can reply here if you have any questions or thoughts.

Keep up the good work and good luck!

Next Steps:

Funnels exercise one more try!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Not only is this helpful for knowing where I stand on the coursework, it's also useful for understanding how I should help critique others.

As for the revisions, it took a couple days and a couple pages, but I think this is the best I've got.

Hi there!

Good job with the revision!!

The ellipses now mostly align to the minor axis ( much better than last try) but practice smooth ellipses in your warmups from now on and make sure to review your critique while doing so.

Nevertheless I think you are now clear to proceed to 250 box challenge!!

Keep up the good work and good luck!

Next Steps:

Proceed to 250 box challenge!!!

Remember to do warm up exercises of lesson 1 during the 250 box challenge!!

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
