Hey there Beer, welcome to DaB, I'm Reboot and I'll be doing your critique today! For you to easily understand your critique I'll be dividing the critique into 3 sections, boxes, ellipses and boxes. Before I start, I'd like to remind you that it's completely okay to make mistakes.

LINES-

SUPERINTENDENT LINES- I have noticed that there is a lot of arcing here, there are two possible causes-

                                             1. not using shoulder- If this is the case, always make sure you use your shoulder, it is normal to sometimes slip back into using your wrist, especially when you not used to it but make sure that you take notice of it and start using your shoulders again

                                             2. Natural tendency- Some people simply have a natural tendency to move the entire hand(including shoulders) In an arcing movement, leading to arcing lines. I had experienced this, and if you are too, then try to slightly arc you hand towards the opposite direction. On top of that, when experiencing this I made sure to actually look at my arms movment to see if it is arcing or not and correct it

Check which of the above might be the cause and use the suggested fixing method to straighten up those damn lines.

GHOSTED LINES- The arcing problem persists here aswell, and i've also noticed a bit of wobbliness. When you go slower you brain takes notice when you go of track and tries to correct it subconsiously leading to a wobbly line. What you can do is move you hand faster, thus not giving your brain a chance to slip into autocorrect.

GHOSTED PLANES- The arcing here is a bit less comparitivally, and there si still a little wobbliness. I won't go into this further since I've already explained the causes and fixes for these problem above.

ELLIPSES-

ELLIPSES ONE PLANES- Your ellipses are pretty unconfident here but do get improved later on. One thing to remember to keep your ellipses from looking deformed is to make sure that you dont slow down or speed up your arms movement during any given point of drawing the ellipse

TABLE OF ELLIPSES- Your ellipses touch all 4 sides and are pretty confident, but one thing I noticed is that they taper towards a certain end, as mentioned above this is due to you slowing down at one point

FUNNELS- pretty well done, Your ellipses align pretty well with the minor axis(excluding the two bottom ones)

BOXES-

ROUGH PERSPECTIVE- I notice that soem of you lines diverge from the vp rather than converge, always be careful with that. Try to imagine a straight line from the dot to the vp, it will be hard at first but you will gat there

ROTATED BOXES- This is pretty good! The only problem here that I notice is the rate of foreshortening is higher in one side, making the entire thing look lopsided

ORGANISC PERSPECTIVE- You have done a good job with the scaling of boxes, but sometimes I notice a lot of divergine, a always be mindfull with that.

Overall you have done a pretty good job, please make sure you read through the critique thoroughly to get the best out of it. The main thing u need to improve on are on diverging boxes and line quality.

side note: ALway remember to do your warmups, this will help you A LOT.

Next Steps:

1 page of ghosted planes

1/3 page of organic boxes

for this you only need to do one of the three swoopy lines for a page.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey Reboot, thank you very much for your critique!

I think most of my mistakes were due to not enough ghosting and a little bit of rushing the exercises. When I take more time, I have better results.

Here is my revisions: https://imgur.com/a/7ksgZjv

The messed up boxes were done too fast, the better ones were done with a lot of ghosted lines and more time to think what result I want before drawing a line.

Thanks again for your time!

Well done, you organic boxes have improved quite much. Your lines are way more confident, especially in your boxes and dont show much arcing, its still not perfect but better.

Keep practicing your lines for atleast 5 min before a session, and add 15 min of ellipses or boxes till your lines dont arc as much anymore. Do remember to take your time ghosting and planning.

Now you can go to the box challenge, hell awaits you

In all seriousnes the box challenge will be difficult, but keep pushing. From experience, that feeling of getting there is so damn good and you will improve on your art alot

Next Steps:

Move on to The 250 box challenge

It is a good start. Just try to keep the end closely to each other, specially on the long line. I know it's hard, but if you think you need more ghosting before, do it.

Ok, thanks for the advice!

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
