Drawabox homework lesson 2:
Hi! I'll take care of reviewing your homework today.
I will try to be as concise as possible, and first of all good job for finishing it.
Arrows:
Starting with the arrows, it's great that the negative space and size of the arrows decrease as they get further away from the viewer.
Although, they all look very similar and it would have been great if you could have practiced more orientations on them.
In future lessons you will use this type of arrows in many directions.
Organic shapes / Ellipses and contour curves:
-
The general shape of your "sausages" is adequate, nothing is overdone.
-
Regarding the ellipses and contour curves I like that they are well aligned to your minor axis.
-
You can always exaggerate the degree change in your ellipses a bit more.
This change should help to give the illusion of three-dimensionality.
Here it is demonstrated more concisely: https://imgur.com/rXLBxSg
It should also apply to contour curves.
Textures:
- Texture work looks adequate.
.
-
The transition from dark to light is correctly extended.
-
No noticeable errors here.
Dissections:
Your textures roll up nicely in the sausage shape.
- The transition from light to dark in textures is also perfect.
Applying this will always reinforce the three-dimensional feel, I recommend you do it every chance you get.
Intersection of shapes:
-
All the shapes look like they belong to the same scene because of their similar size and foreshortening, all good in that part.
-
I see that you worked a bit with the intersections, if you still don't understand them don't worry, we will see them in more detail later.
Organic intersections:
-
The shapes look good resting on top of each other, that's adequate.
-
There is not too much to emphasize here.
Homework:
I'll leave you a bit to practice drawing your arrows in other directions.
It's okay if they look strange at first, the important thing is that you experiment.
Next Steps:
Draw:
- 1 page of organic arrows.

Staedtler Pigment Liners
These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.
Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
