First entry. This was both more difficult and easier than I expected it would be.

Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your lesson 1 homework

Lines

-Starting with the superimposed lines exercise you are doing a great job always starting at a clearly defined point and keeping all of the wavering on one side, I do notice that some of them wobble slightly so make sure you always prioritize confidence over accuracy Also do your best to engage your whole arm with a locked wrist when drawing your marks.

-Moving on to the ghosted lines, here you are doing a great job committing to your lines even if you are going to miss the ending dot which is exactly what we are aiming at with this exercise.

-The ghosted planes are no different from the ghosted lines, and your linework is coming along nicely

Ellipses

-Starting with the tables of ellipses these are looking very tidy instead of rushed and I can see that you have kept the degree, spacing, alignment of these in mind. You have also drawn through them as needed and all of the ellipses are symmetrical.

-On the ellipses in planes it is great to see that you are not overly concerned with having your ellipses touch the four sides of the plane and instead focused on drawing smooth elliptical shapes, so always do this for all the ellipses that you will draw for your future homework.

-Your funnels are turning out well, and it is good to see that your ellipses didn’t stiffen and are confident, all of them are fitting snugly and do not spill out of the boundaries, the minor axis cuts each of them in equal halves. What you could aim to improve is the alignment, avoid any tilted ellipses Overall you did a great work on this section.

Boxes

-Starting with the rough perspective, I want to call out a few things. First make sure you don’t repeat your lines, if you make a mistake leave it like that, do not draw more lines on top of it as it only makes it stand out more. Secondly, and as a very minor point, give each line as much time and thinking as it requires of you, each line is no less important for being part of a larger group.

-Your rotated boxes are turning out well as you have kept the gaps between boxes narrow and the rotation is clearly there. Do not be sketchy with your hatching, returning to the point I

made in the previous exercise, ghost an additional line to draw it to the best of your ability.

-Finishing with the organic perspective, your linework is looking solid. Main thing here is that you should try to use lineweight to specify overlaps, it is a good opportunity to use it as we have many boxes grouped together creating a lot of visual noise. Lastly your box's perspective has some issues but you will work on that on the box challenge.

So I’ll go ahead and mark this lesson as complete, now move on to the box challenge, good luck!!

Next Steps:

250 Box Challenge

Thank you for the critique! I can definitely see what you mean with the boxes. Being completely honest, some of them were rushed. I'll take my time when doing the 250 boxes.

Thanks again!

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
