  • Superimposing: OK

  • Ghosting: OK

  • Planes: OK

  • Ellipses tables: you should try to make them touch row boundaries and other ellipses, also vary degrees among rows (i.e. one row of circles, another of very thin ones, etc)

  • Ellipses in planes: while you did try to hit 2 points on a plane you were supposed to try to hit 4 points (the middle points of each border line)

  • Funnels: ellipses should be varying in degree - your funnel ellipses have nearly the same degree

  • Plotted perspective: OK

  • Rough perspective: OK

  • Organic perspective: your boxes convergence lines diverge a lot (convergence lines start on corner of the box closest to viewer (Y shape center) and then all parallel lines to Y lines should converge (get closer) as it goes away. Also draw through your boxes.

  • Rotated boxes: center box and 4 boxes around were good, then mistakes happened: next boxes in line have same convergence as initial 4 boxes - it should converge more as box gets rotated. As for boxes in between you should not guess that much - boxes should be very close to each other so that 2 planes of boxes in between can be almost the same as nearby boxes. Also draw through your boxes.

Next Steps:

Reread relevant ellipse info about ellipse degree and practice drawing ellipses with varying degrees

  • 1 page of table of ellipses

  • 1 page of ellipses in planes

  • 1 page of funnels

Reread relevant box info about convergence ( check out 250 boxes challenge video/text - it covers how to draw boxes from imagination quite well) and practice some freehand boxes

  • 1 page of organic perspective

  • 1 page of rotated boxes

Ellipses look OK now, though their degrees in funnels barely vary...

Rotated boxes look OK now

organic perspective is still bad but I guess 250 boxes challenge will improve those boxes so you can move on. Do not forget to limit boxes to ~5/6 per page and extend convergence lines after every page.

2 Pages of Super Imposed Lines

good confident strokes, would have been better if there was lines the full length of the page

1 Page of Ghosted Lines

very accurate I have no complaints

2 Pages of Ghosted Planes

very well executed with confident strokes (maybe try drawing from your shoulder more to ensure certains lines are as straight as they can be)

2 Pages of Tables of Ellipses

great elipses and confident stroke but try make the elipses hit the outer edges of the enclosure

2 Pages of Ellipses in Planes

this is ok, maybe ghost more to try make the elipse hit all sides of the box

1 Page of Funnels

amazing work

1 Page of Plotted Perspective

really good work, try and ensure all lines hit the same vanishing point as it looks like some points dont point there

2 Pages of Rough Perspective

really good work but try and be more confident with your lines and commit fully. (there is a little bit of wobble, maybe more ghosting)

1 Page of Rotated Boxes

good work but try and draw through all the boxes

2 Pages of Organic Perspective

good work

Next Steps:

move on to the 250 box challenge

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
