Hello all! I am new here and have just finished this after about 2 months of effort and trying to keep the 50% rule. I have enjoyed the exercises so far even though they were quite hard.

There are some things that I wish I could have done better. I still feel like I have work to do on the ghosting method and some of my ellipses come out pointier/messier than I would like. During the rough perspective exercise pages I made some bad messes and at some points I made the mistake of panicking and trying to correct bad lines. It also took me a while to get how to draw boxes with the Y method while also thinking about their placement in space, and my first page of rotated boxes especially came out weird.

Still I feel like I have learned a lot and I look forward to continuing the course. I will be grateful for any feedback on lesson 1. Thanks to everyone for this great community and to Uncomfortable for these great lessons!

Greets~!

Superimposed lines:

There was a lot of fraying at the end of the lines, but that is normal and is to be expected.

You did this exercise pretty well.

Ghosted lines:

Came out pretty decent, most of the lines are straight and confident.

You did this exercise pretty well.

Ghosted planes:

I get the impression that you were aiming for accuracy instead of confidence here, since lines here are often wobbly.

remember that confident strokes are a priority, accuracy is not nearly as important.

You could use some more work with this exercise, so make sure to include it in your warmups for a bit.

Tables of Ellipses:

Your ellipses seem to have a weird, asymmetric shape to them sometimes, but it isn't such a big deal. Just take a little bit more time ghosting over them.

Some of your ellipses were a bit off in terms of accuracy, but that is alright.

You did this exercise well enough.

Ellipses in Planes:

A lot of the ellipses seem to overlap or not touch some sides of the planes.

Which is alright, accuracy is not our priority, but I'd still recommend you include this exercise in some of your warmups.

You did the exercise well enough.

Funnels:

Most of your ellipses were decent here, but some are a bit off-axis. (as in, their minor axis does not align with the funnel axis.)

You did this exercise well.

Plotted Perspective:

Looks fairly well, my only complaint would be perhaps the right-most box in the last panel being too close to the vanishing point and thus too distorted. Not too big of a deal, but do keep that in mind.

You did this exercise well.

Rough Perspective:

Is quite good, most of the lines converge decently, but it seems that you could use a bit more confidence in the lines of the boxes themselves. That is, however, somewhat of a nitpick.

You did this exercise pretty well.

Rotated Boxes:

Looks decent, my only complaint would be that the rotations are not consistent, which is especially notable when looking at the top-left quarter section of the exercise.

You did this exercise well.

Organic Perspective:

Some minor issues with lines aside (similar to those as in the rough perspective), the result is decent.

You did this exercise pretty well.

Good job at completing the first lesson~!

Next Steps:

250 box challenge

(Yes, it is done before Lesson 2)

your lines are quite wobbly on some of the challenges

remember to ghost through your lines until you are confident that you can make the line, sometimes our lines won't always be as straight we want them to but we do want to prioritize confidence over accuracy and also remember to draw from your shoulder

for your ellipses make sure to try to hit every side of the box

and for funnels try to make sure that the ellipses would fold in half evenly as if it were cut down the line

and just remember to never draw over your lines

Next Steps:

one page of organic perspective please

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
