Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
4:39 PM, Sunday January 30th 2022
HI, this is the first time Im doing this, I think its worked. Please let me know if the link doesnt work.
In super-imposed lines, some of the lines have fraying on both ends. For this exercise, make sure to slow down and place the pen carefully at the start of each line.
Your ghosted lines have some wobbling and curving. Remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy. If curving continues to be an issue, you can try to curve in the opposite direction, and the two should cancel each other out. Ghosted planes also shows these issues, but overall I think there’s an improvement and the lines appear more confident.
The ellipses in the ghosted planes don’t always meet every side of the plane, but I think the ellipses are drawn confidently. This could be a warm up exercise for the future.
On the organic perspective, it looks like one of the squares was forgotten about, and it’s a 2D object amongst the 3D boxes. Looks like the curving lines has persisted throughout the exercises, though I’m not seeing as many wobbly lines, so that’s good!
Next Steps:
I think you're good to move onto the 250 box challenge. For your warm-up exercises, work on canceling out the curve in your lines.
Thanks for the critique @Mewithe. I will definately work on the above mentioned items. I did think afterwards that maybe I was too hasty with some of the lessons (hence fraying on both ends and the 2D box) will need to work on slowing down and thinking things through instead of rushing.
Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
