hi,

this is my first time trying the draw a box lessons and I found them to be very helpful. Keep up the good work!

Hello and congrats on finishing the first lesson of drawabox. I’ll be taking a look at your work today. Starting with your superimposed lines you seemed to be struggling at first with a lot of wobbliness on these especially on longer lines and curves but I’m noticing some real improvement as you worked through these. Your ghosted lines are showing a lack of confidence as well. Always remember to ghost a line multiple times and then put it down without thinking about accuracy. Think about the accuracy more while you are ghosting and then put your line down with confidence. I’m seeing a lot of improvement on your ghosted planes so that is good to see. You seem to be more sure and careful about the marks you are making here and the results are much more confident and accurate.

Moving onto your ellipses, I’m seeing a lot of improvement throughout these pages. The first few sets in your tables were having lots of issues with integrity and shape but you did a good job on drawing through your ellipses multiple times. As you worked through the tables I’m already seeing noticeable improvement but you will still want to include ellipses in your warmups for a while. You were struggling quite a bit more on your ellipses in planes because you are shooting for a shape that matches some of your more extreme planes and it is throwing you off a bit. Always remember to ghost your ellipses multiple times before committing this will help you build up the confidence in the shape you are trying to make. You are also getting some slanting in your ellipses in funnels so that is something you should try and be conscious of as well. Please refer back to the lesson homework here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/notaligned

Your plotted perspective came out quite well. I’m not seeing too many issues with your rough perspective pages either. You correctly extended back your boxes here to check your work and as you can see your perspective was quite off on some of these but that is something that is going to improve a lot more as you were through these lessons. I’m also seeing much better line quality and confidence here so that is great to see.

So your rotated box exercise here is a bit of a mixed bag. You kept your gaps nicely consistent and narrow for the most part but you made a critical error of drawing a bit too small. When it comes to working through these lessons drawing bigger is almost always going to be better. Drawing bigger will help you think through the spatial problems you are facing much easier. Because you drew these so small you even gave up on a few of the boxes at the far corners and didn’t even draw them. Now I’m not going to have you redo this but I want to be aware of it and try and draw bigger in the future.

Finally looking at your organic perspective exercise this is looking pretty good. You have good line confidence throughout these and while your boxes are having convergence problems that will improve a lot as you work through the 250 box challenge. However, you didn’t actually do TWO pages of organic perspective. I'm only seeing one here in the submission. I’m seeing a lot of improvement throughout this set and great job almost completing the lesson. I’m not going to have you actually redo any pages but I would still like you to submit the missing page of organic perspective boxes before letting you move on to the 250 box challenge.

Next Steps:

Please submit the missing page of organic perspective boxes.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi Rob,thank you for your feedback. Here is the link to my organic perspective # 2 page:

I hope this is not counted as the 2nd credit because I am working on the 250box challenge right now and need a credit for that as well. So I can submit that after 2 weeks correct?

No, they shouldn't cost credits and you can submit after 2 weeks. Your 2nd page looks good so you are good to move on to the 250 box challenge. Good luck!

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thanks so much Rob! And just wondering when I submit 250 boxes, do I submit all the pages? They just seem like a lot of pages.

sincerely,

Mojojojo

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
