Some of the pages are in a different order on imgur than I did them in, and I didn't label them in any way, so let me know if I need to change that/if anyone needs any type of clarification. Some of my lines (especially on some pages) are really faint/didn't get picked up by the scanner, so let me know if that's a problem. I was also wondering if it mattered which direction some of the lines were drawn in, and if it changed depending on which hand is dominant? Like, for the superimposed lines, I noticed it was far easier to go from right to left because I'm left handed, and pulling was far easier than pushing. (You might notice on one of the pages, I go back and forth a bit. I was testing which one felt better). Would that cause any problems in the future? I know in one of the vidoes that he said to turn the page in any direction that is easiest to do the lines (I believe this was in the ghosted line section), but I never could figure out a way to turn the page in a way that I would be simultaneously pulling and going from the left to the right. Obviously, any other tips/critiques are welcome.

Helloo Houston1722!

First of all, congratulations on finishing your first DAB exercise!

I don't think the faint lines are a problem, as long as we can see them. Also, don't worry about the dominant hand thing, just do whatever is best for you to draw from your shoulder so that you get confident and not wobbly lines.

So here are some stuff i noticed in your drawings:

  • Your lines look good in general, there's a bit of arching on the longer lines of the superimposed lines exercise so watch out for that. The ghosting lines exercise looks great, but your lines came out quite wobbly on the ghosted planes, i'll just remind you of always draw from your shoulder, even when you have small lines. I think part of why this happened is because you were trying to figure it out what works best for you.

  • Good job with the ellipses! They are drawn confidently and they are within the bounds, i see you didn't drawn through 2/3 times on some of the ellipses, but i think you are aware that it should've had been. This extends to the funnels exercise, and additionally, the minor axis is cutting the ellipses in 2 symmetrical halves, so congrats.

  • In your rough perspective drawings you did right by keeping the horizontal lines parallel to the horizon line, and the vertical ones perpendicular to it, but you lines are quite wobbly, also i see you repeated some lines, which is kinda of a normal thing for beginners to do, but remember that you shouldn't repeat a line, if there's a mistake it must be taken as if is correct and move on.

  • The organic perspective exercise is good too, the boxes look wonky because the perspective is off and they came out distorted which is very normal at this point of the course. Again i see some line repetition and some wobblying, so i think you should practice drawing from your shoulder more.

  • I don't really have much to say about the rotated boxes exercise, to me it looks like they are rotating, which is the goal of the exercise, and there's the same lines issues.

I hope this was helpful to you and i think you're ready for the 250 Boxes Challenge!

Yeah, thanks so much!! I think for the ellipses I misunderstood-- I thought the "drawing through" two to three times meant while ghosting, as in, ghosting the ellipse two to three times. And yes :) I was really bad at the drawing from the shoulder thing when I was doing shorter lines that I could technically reach by drawing with my elbow. I'll work on that and also the arching of the lines.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
