Hey I'm a high-schooler striving to get as good as the pros. Drawabox is a step (out of many) towards that goal. I've got to say, I'm pretty proud of finishing the last Organic Perspective exercise just now. And with that, lesson 1 is complete. Thank you in advance for critiquing my work :D !!!!!!!!!

Hi Yiumyo! Overall I think you did very well with this lesson, and I even think you show improvement with your accuracy as your lessons progress. One thing I have to note is that many of your boxes in the Organic Perspective excersise are very similar to each other (same roation and level of perspective) and when you're doing your 250 box challenge it might be good for you to focus on many different orintations and depthness of perspective.

Next Steps:

I think you should progress to 250 box challenge

Thanks for checking out my work! I totally agree with you that my boxes get repetitive. I'm a little lost when it comes to changing a box's orientation but I'll do my best to learn.

Hi!

Overall, your lines are strong and confident. There seems to be fraying on both sides on your Superimposed Lines, so I think you should take more care with that. Sometimes in your Tables of Ellipses you only drew through the ellipses once, but you drew through them more in the later exercises (so I won't say anything on that). Overall it looks very good!

(I'm also a high schooler, so I hope this was helpful)

Next Steps:

Continue to the 250 Box Challenge

Yippee!! Thanks for the critique. I’ll be mindful about my ellipses. Also it’s cool knowing people my age draw boxes :)

Dear Yiumyo,

As promised, here is my critique of your work:

  • Superimposed Lines: your lines are smooth and confident, but notice there is fraying on both sides of many of the line sets. In the future, make sure to take the time to put the pen directly on the starting point before drawing a line.

  • Ghosted Lines: again, the lines are smooth and confident, but you can see that most lines cross neither of the start or finish points. Make sure the pen is on the starting line when you draw your lines.

_ Ghosted planes: Good

  • Table of ellipses: Good

  • Funnels: Good

  • Ellipses in Planes: I noticed you underestimate the size of the ellipse the larger the plane is, and as a result, you draw through the ellipsis more than twice to compensate, so my advice would be to overestimate the size of the ellipsis for big planes and to avoid drawing through the ellipsis more than twice because doing so would not allow you to clearly see your mistakes and learn from them moving forward

  • Plotted Perspective: Good

  • Plotted Perspective: Good, though there are many instances where one of the edges of the boxes is redrawn, so perhaps you rushed a bit during this exercise and didn't prepare enough before drawing each line, or perhaps you were not satisfied with the initial line and decided to draw over it. I'm only bringing this up because it occurred a lot for this exercise.

  • Rotated Boxes: Good. Unlike me, you rotated the boxes with enough angle each time for the rotation effect to be visible. Just keep in mind that while a set of edges that initially converge towards an infinite vanishing point converge more and more with each rotation, the rate of conversion slows down as we approach the central VP, so the convergence of those edges in the second set of boxes should be more pronounced (as you represented it), but the rate of conversion should be less than that of the first set of boxes (i.e., the boxes that are adjacent to the central box).

  • Organic Perspective: Good, but again, enough edges are redrawn for it to be noticeable. You need to either plan more carefully before executing the line and/or accept your mistakes and adapt the rest of the drawing to them.

Next Steps:

Move along to the rest of the course, but do as the course says and keep practising using lesson 1 execises. As you redo those execises, try to do so slowly and precisely, and focus on the technique you're using rather than the quality of the final result. Also, re-reading lesson 0 and 1 wouldn't hurt (it helped in my case).

Thank you for your words! I redraw my lines a lot because it's hard to move past a mistake. I'll be sure to stop doing that and work steady.

These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
