Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
4:50 PM, Friday August 13th 2021
Would greatly appreciate any feedback! I have not drawn since I was 12, and am trying again at 20 years old. Thank you so much for your time :)
Hi Karamonk! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.
Lines
Superimposed: one thing I can point out is that you are fraying on both ends, specially on curved lines. Keep in mind you should place your fineliner carefully on only one point and then strike your lines as they come.
Lines: already achieving confidence on ghosted planes. Be careful of wobbliness when getting near the ending points of the line. Remember: confidence > accuracy.
Ellipses
Table of ellipses: you tried a wide variety, always reaching for bounds, but one main problem - ellipses with pointy edges, specially narrow ones.
Funnels: your second attempt was much better. Be aware that minor axis should always bisect ellipses.
Boxes
Perspective: Good job at almost always keeping width lines parallel and height lines perpendicular to the horizon line. Be aware of scratchy lines.
Rotated: good job at keeping edges close, be aware last row from each end is not rotating. See diagram: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg
Organic: I think you are being too hard on yourself! All in all this is a good first attempt at drawing boxes in perspective. You will get better with practice, that's for sure.
Final thoughts
I think you did a decent job on this lesson. You clearly understood the main goals of the excercises. I see only one problem that I think is worth doing another attempt. That's why I'll request only one revision before you move on to the next part of the course.
Next Steps:
I reccommend you to do:
Just attach your revision to the reply and I'll mark this lesson as complete.
Thank you so much for the critique! I really appreciate how detailed and thorough it is.
My apologies for replying to this so late, in all honesty I didn't actually notice I got a critique (still new to DaB).
On the topic of my pointy ellipses, I've discovered my biggest problem is when drawing over the ellipse the second time. I tend to get nervous when doing that part, and it very rarely matches my initial ellipse. It turns out I've been rushing through that part in fear of them coming out badly. Upon slowing down just a little, and managing to relax my shoulder, I found my lines coming out less jagged and more accurate. I only figured this out about three quarters through the exercise, and they could definitely still use more work. Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention.

And thank you again for your time.
I'm glad you found this useful. I can already see your ellipses becoming better! So I'll be marking this lesson as complete.
Next Steps:
Move on to 250 Box Challenge.
Thank you so much!
These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
