Hello I'll be handling the critique for your lesson 1 homework

Lines

-Starting with the superimposed lines exercise you are doing a great job always starting at a clearly defined point and keeping all of the wavering on one side, your lines do not have a lot of fraying but they wobble slightly, keep in mind that you always want to prioritize confidence over accuracy when making your marks.

-Moving on to the ghosted lines, here I can see that you were more worried about hitting the endpoints, this made your lines look wobblier than the ones in the previous exercise You want your lines to flow smoothly and follow a consistent trajectory even if they are going to miss the ending dot. Since you are beginning to practice these exercises, it is a good idea to draw relatively fast to avoid any chance of wobbling.

-The ghosted planes show some of the problems already mentioned but overall your linework is looking much better here.

Ellipses

-Starting with the tables of ellipses, these are looking very tidy instead of rushed, and I can see that you have kept the angle, degree size and spacing of each ellipse in mind, it is good to see that your ellipses fit in snugly within the rectangles while being evenly shaped, so keep up the great work.

-Your ellipses in planes are coming along nicely, and you weren’t too worried with having each ellipse touch the four sides of the plane which helped your ellipses look more confident. That said, you should always aim to draw symmetrical ellipses. I can notice some instances where they have unequally sized ends.

-On the funnels your ellipses look stiffer than the ones in the previous exercise, so try to loosen up and draw them a bit faster so they end up fully confident. You did a great job when it comes to the alignment and spacing

Boxes

-Starting with the rough perspective, try to keep the linework confident, I can see that some of your lines look a little hesitant. Aside from this issue you are doing a great job aligning the sides of the boxes to the horizon line and your estimations to the vanishing point are good and will get better with practice.

-Your rotated boxes are turning out well as you have kept the gaps between boxes narrow and consistent. Just keep working on the rotation, I can see that the front faces of the boxes are rotating but the faces at the back are not, so try to correct this in future attempts.

-Finishing with the organic perspective, I suggest you try to add lineweight to the parts where boxes overlap, the perspective on the boxes does have issues, but that's not a problem as you'll work on it through the box challenge.

Next Steps:

Before you move on to the box challenge please do the following

-1 page of ghosted lines.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thanks for taking your time to critiquing my work. Here's the revision that I just did for ghosted lines . https://imgur.com/a/5TicWVd

I think this is the best I can do with my current level and as you can see the wobbling still exist. I took your advice to draw faster and tried to reduce the amount of pressure that I put on my pen just so that I can get that smooth line for the longer lines (some of them are still wobbly though). I also did notice that my line quality is improving after redoing this exercise although very slight .

Edit : Forgot to mention this but how do I go about adding a lineweight for the overlapping boxes on organic perspective? Do I just ghost the overlapping lines again or can I use a ruler for this?

Okay, I can see that you are doing a better job committing to your lines and there is improvement, the rest will be a matter of practice.

Whenever you add lineweight to boxes that are on top, you can add lineweight just to the part of lines that overlap, not to the entire line, and you have to freehand them too, you cannot use a ruler. Another thing to keep in mind is that you only have to add one superimposed line as you want to keep it very subtle, and they can only be added to the lines representing the silhouette of the box. Take a look at this diagram to get a better understanding.

With all of that taken care of, now you can head on to the box challenge, good luck

PureRef

PureRef

This is another one of those things that aren't sold through Amazon, so I don't get a commission on it - but it's just too good to leave out. PureRef is a fantastic piece of software that is both Windows and Mac compatible. It's used for collecting reference and compiling them into a moodboard. You can move them around freely, have them automatically arranged, zoom in/out and even scale/flip/rotate images as you please. If needed, you can also add little text notes.

When starting on a project, I'll often open it up and start dragging reference images off the internet onto the board. When I'm done, I'll save out a '.pur' file, which embeds all the images. They can get pretty big, but are way more convenient than hauling around folders full of separate images.

Did I mention you can get it for free? The developer allows you to pay whatever amount you want for it. They recommend $5, but they'll allow you to take it for nothing. Really though, with software this versatile and polished, you really should throw them a few bucks if you pick it up. It's more than worth it.
