Hey drawaboxers,

Finally finished 250 boxes and I can definitely see how the excercise has earned its rep. I remember first trying drawbox in mid 2019 and giving up very, very early (in eclipses, I know). A part of me is proud to have made it further than last time, though I know there's still a long journey ahead I'm definitely determined to see it all the way through this time. The challenge has definitely tested my resolve alongside the skills from earlier lessons.

Back to the main topic at hand, there was a lot to take in and ofcause much to take away from the 250 box challenge. The start and conclusion of the challenge did give me some mixed feelings. Whilst there was some drastic improvements thanks to the feedback of everyone at the discord, even at the last box I couldn't get all the converges right. Always a few stray lines sticking out here and there. Oh well. Despite that I've learned quite a bit and developed a sense of intuition and a nice method for getting the boxes done. I hope the work is satisfactory and once again, any feedback would be much appreciated! Please let me know your thoughts.

Note: Whilst doing the boxes early in the challenge accidentally miscounted so there is one more page than necessary, my bad. (I guess this is closer to 256 boxes than 250 lol).

Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your 250 Box Challenge

Linework

-Your lines are looking confidently drawn which has definitely helped your boxes look more solid and believable. You are using the ghosting method to get confident lines while maintaining good accuracy.

-It is nice to see that you are using hatching, and it is looking tidy rather than rushed but it could definitely be tidier, remember that each line is no less important for being part of a larger group, so give each one of them as much attention and focus as it requires, to draw them to the best of your ability.

-Lastly I want to talk about lineweight, I think you have done a great job when it comes to applying it, as it is looking very subtle and you did not overdo it, just remember to apply only on the edges of the box or the lines that represent its silhouette as shown in this image

Box Construction

-There was definitely a good deal of improvement on some of the earlier boxes of your set you had struggled with diverging lines a lot, but as you pushed forwards this issue diminished considerably. Anyways, I want to go over a few points.

-You still have trouble with lines converging in pairs as shown here, this suggests that there are two vanishing points but we know this is incorrect, one thing that can help you is to take a look at this diagram which shows the relationship between each pairs of lines and the angles they form respective to their vanishing point. The inner pair of lines will always be quite similar in their orientation and the outer pair can vary a lot depending on the location of the vanishing point.

-I want you to keep experimenting with the rates of foreshortening, you stuck to boxes with dramatic foreshortening for the most part, so I want you to try boxes with more shallow foreshortening, additionally I want you to keep experimenting with the orientation of the boxes if you have trouble coming up with new orientation you can take a look at this image and use it as reference .

Okay, so as I wrote before there was a good deal of improvement on your set, so I’ll go ahead and mark this lesson as complete, now you can move on to lesson 2.

Next Steps:

Lesson 2

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Thank you for the feedback, I'll keep those points in mind and continue onwards to lesson 2. Should I continue to do a page or two during warmups?

Yes, you should continue revisiting all of the previous exercises, the amount depends on how long it takes you to draw a box, so instead of focusing on the amount try to focus more on the time, remember that a warmup should take you around 10-15 minutes. Ideally you want to pick up 3 exercises and do them for 5 min each, so try to stick to that. Hopefully that clears your doubts, good luck

Thanks again, I'll make sure to do that.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
