Hi and congrats on completing lesson 1. I'll be checking your submission today. So starting with your superimposed lines these are off to a good start. I'm already seeing improvement by the second page on these with less tapering overall. You could do a slightly better job keeping a neat starting point on these are on the right track. Moving onto your ghosted lines and planes these are generally pretty good. You are employing the ghosting method well and achieving some smooth and confident linework. Your accuracy isn't always on the money but that will grow with practice.

Your table of ellispes turned out pretty well. You are doing a great job drawing through all of your ellipses and you seem to be focusing on trying to achieve a smooth ellipse shape overall which is good to see. Your accuracy still needs quite a bit of work but maintaining that smooth ellipse shape is your current priority and you are doing quite well in this regard. Your ghosted planes are looking pretty similar and once again you are doing a good job focusing on maintaing a solid shape. Now your accuracy is far more off on these which is typical as these are harder to draw than the ellipses in tables so these would be great practice for you during your warmup exercises. The ellipses in funnels exercise turned out decently. You are keeping smooth ellipse shapes but I am noticing that some of your ellipses are starting to tilt off the minor axis so that is something you will want to keep in mind. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/notaligned You should also try widening the degrees of your ellipses as they move outwards in the funnel. Please check the lesson notes here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/step3

Plotted perspective looks good nothing to mention here. Your rough perspective boxes exercise turned out very well! Your linework here is very good and you are doing a great job with the ghosting method. You also did a great job extending the lines back on your boxes and while some of your estimations were a little off you did fairly well for the most part and this will only get better with practice.

Your rotated box exercise was a really good attempt. Once again your line work is really great here and you did a good job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps narrow and consistent. You are running into a pretty common issue of not rotating some of your boxes enough. Please check the lesson notes here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/notrotating Finally, your organic box exercise also turned out really well. Your line quality is getting better and better as you work through these exercises and your box convergences seem pretty good for the most part but there's always room for improvement. Another thing you can consider with an exercise like this is that you could have a heavier line weight on the boxes that are closer to the viewer and less line weight for the boxes in the distance.

This was a really good submission with a lot of growth shown throughout. Your line quality in particular had a huge boost particularly in those last few exercises. Your ellipses seem to be a weak point, as they are for a lot of people, and probably should have most of your attention in your warmups until you get a bit more comfortable with them. I'm going to mark this as complete and good luck with the 250 box challenge. Keep up the good work!

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thank you Rob. Appreciate the feedback.

I will definitely start doing more ellipses in my warm up.

On to the 250 box challenge now!

Cheers

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
