Hi, thank you for providing this learning ressource!

  • I used the wrong type of pen in the beginning and it took me a bit to realize. Starting with the boxes exercise I switched to a fineliner.

Lines: they're a bit shaky. In the last task (Organic perspective) they are like arches bending. I hope you're drawing from the shoulder. If so, try to deliberately bend the line in the opposite direction.

Ellipses: I hope you're using the ghost method, because you have a discrepancy on the second pass through the ellipse. With funnels, the line in the middle should divide the ellipses into symmetrical halves.

Rough perspective (page 10): horizontal lines should be perfectly parallel to the horizon line. Vertical lines should be perfectly perpendicular to the horizon line.

Rotated boxes: they do not seem to rotate. Also, the boxes to be drawn here are not perfectly rectilinear or cuboid. The far plane of these boxes will be smaller than the near one.

Hi, the comment of 37champion has summarized a lot. I'd like to add to their comment and select the "next step" option.

Lines

The wobbly lines does present a slight problem — maybe you'll want to re-read the "Lines: Using Your Arm" section in the lesson. It will be fine as long as the posture is not off.

Ellipses

I think the discrepancies in the ellipses are fine; they will tighten up with practice. Some ellipses are not as smooth though, maybe try planning more ahead before even starting to ghost, if this problem persists in the future. But always make sure to prioritize confidence, fluidity and smoothness over accuracy.

Boxes

The boxes in the rotated boxes page should rotate more, but future challenges will provide more drills on that. However, even when inferring lines from nearby environments, you should still pay attention to the vanishing points and directions of convergence, so as not to let a box appear too far off.

In the organic perspective page, nearby boxes tend to be similar in orientation (which might cover up mistakes in successive repeats). Also, the lines tend to be parallel rather than converging, which has no problem on itself but for practice we need more diverse scenarios. There is a section of explicit "important reminders" for these in the 250 boxes challenge, so no worries.

I think the work overall shows that you have been following the instructions well and have got a good understanding. This is my first time commenting (I have not even had my own work critiqued), and I might have missed important aspects. I would be glad if more experienced people can help if I make mistakes.

Next Steps:

Proceed to the 250 Box Challenge

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
