Thats a pretty fantastic work Kaneki. Hats off for that. keep up the good work!. alrighty lets roll the intro:

Hey. I'm Chiran and I decided to check your submission and offer my insights on your work in a helpful way as best as possible. sorry for the delay though :(

Okay lets start chipping down your submission into three parts and explore one by one:

PART 1: THE PRAISES( the job you did well in lines, ellipses and boxes):

LINES:

  • your lines are off to a great start!. It reveals that they are smooth, confident and consistent throughout your work. and we can say that you prioritized confidence and draw them from your shoulder so Its a good job!

  • first thing I noticed in super Imposed exercise was that there was no fraying on the starting point and even on the end point so that means that you did take time to position the pen exactly at the starting point.so that’s good!

  • Ghosted lines exercises are done pretty well too!. I can say that you are building confidence and patience by plotting down the starting and end points of lines and ghosting over them before executing these lines so thats good job.

ELLIPSES:

  • your ellipses are awesome Man.. Again I appreciate that you did take time to plan where your ellipses sit before executing and strive to keep them within the Bounds so thats good job too.

  • How are your ellipses? - your Ellipses are smooth, even ( symmetrical), confident and are drawn through 2- 3 times.so thats perfecto!

  • you did strive to keep ellipses within the funnels and increased their degrees as they move outwards, so thats job well done. there is still room for improvement here so always make sure that you are doing your best to align those ellipses to the minor axis as possible.

BOXES:

  • your boxes are off to a good start. they are drawn through ( like having x ray vision) and are pre planned before executing by using the ghosting technique to plot down the points so thats perfect I get the sense that you've understood the concept of perspective very well!

  • Splendid work on your rotated boxes and organic perspective exercises: Btw your boxes are enormously improved after the 250 box challenge so thats nice!

PART 2: WHERE IT WENT SLIGHTLY OFF? ( Where you should keep an eye on)

I think You are definitely on the right path and quickly headed in this direction. and also you have understood the purpose of each exercises very well so the lesson 1 has done its job.but there are some teeny tiny hiccups in your work that needs to be identified and removed. They are greatly reduced in your future work but still I'll mention some points ,cuz It will destroy the purpose of this feed back and therefore help your brain to avoid those issues in the future: so yeah I will do my job to mention and identify some of the minor issues in your works and you can do your job by including any 1 or 2 exercises in your warm ups for 10- 15 minutes to reduce them.

LINES:

  • One minor thing I noticed in the super Imposed exercise was some little bit of course correction in your lines. you did sometimes course correct your line path when they went off their trajectory so thereby the lines sometimes contains a minor ( subtle but noticeable) S curve and arches. although Its not a big deal but should be conscious about these as well.

  • In ghosted lines exercise they are some minor areas where you did not fully commit your lines and you did tend to slow down while reaching the end points thereby creating a subtle wobbly lines at the End. In such cases lifting your pen off while reaching the end points might help and You should always give the confidence a higher priority.

ELLIPSES:

  • sometimes the ellipses are drawn 1.5 times instead of 2 or 3 times. so we advice you to always continue to draw through your ellipses 2 times preferable to build better mileage and muscle memory with them.

BOXES:

  • In a minor times in the rough point perspective you did seem to repeat or correct your lines path. so again we request you to not to do that and try to move on thinking them correct. It would have been better if you had included some bigger boxes in the exercise to solve some spatial problems. But I'm 100 % confident that you are now been able to construct every variety of boxes in your work since you pretty nicely completed 250 box challenge.

  • Even while adding line weight to the boxes, make sure to plan and ghost your lines and execute it with confidence and commit to them fully.

  • In rotated boxes the Extreme corner boxes are not drawn through. yep Its not a big deal but you should be aware of it as well.

PART 3 : THE JOB WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE THEM:

yes We should continue to use ghosting method, drawing from shoulder and make sure that We are always use our arm to get the best flow as possible.

Overall I think that you pretty much nailed down the concept of pressure control of your pen, by knowing how much pressure to apply and also how much pressure to hold the pen you are now pretty much able to execute accurate, confident and smooth lines. so hats off again and keep up the good work!.

From the lesson 1 we mainly learnt that Confidence and drawing from shoulder should be given the utmost priority in order to produce smooth and consistent marks. and this should be continued throughout the lessons of draw a box.also make sure to incorporate these exercises in your regular warm up routines. pick any 1 or 2 exercise and try to do it for 10 -15 min with striving towards the goal. because these warm ups are the hard requirements for any artists at any skill level!

MY POINT OF VIEW:

this was the nice and solid submission ever.I believe you are quickly headed in the right direction. Yep I'm marking your lesson as complete.

Yo ! we made it. Congratulation on completing the lesson 1 Kaneki . I believe this feedbacks helps.

and have a wonderful artistic journey ahead!.

P.S: Can I take a look at your 250 box challenge submission and offer my Insights as well? if you are willing to, please make sure to reply section

Thank you Kaneki.

Next Steps:

WHAT NEXT?

1.set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes- know your goal , be conscious of your mistakes and fight for 10 or 15 min in warm ups. be as perfect as you can but don't expect perfection!.

2.yo you already completed the 250 box challenge :D.

Good luck on your future lessons. Awaiting to see your progress.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
