Warmups for short drawing sessions?

8:55 PM, Monday January 1st 2024

With how my life is at the moment, I often don’t have time to sit down to one long session of drawing practice— I usually sit down multiple times a day for ~20 minutes at a time. If I spend the recommended 10~15 minutes doing warmups each time, I end up spending more than half my drawing time on warmups. Is this to be expected? Or would it be reasonable for me to shorten the warmup times for each drawing session?

Sounds like it would make sense to either do one warmup per day, or shorten your warmups to 5 minutes per session, so you still get to the meat of your drawing practice.

I'd recommend leaning towards the latter option – thinking about your warmup as a percentage of each drawing session. If you warm up in the morning and then do other stuff for a while, you won't be loose anymore when you come back. A lil' bit warm is better than none warm.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
