Congrats on finishing lesson 4!

Organic Forms with Contour Curves:

The outlines that make up the forms are mostly smooth. The contours are also well drawn but they have to the problem of curving in too intensly, making a sharp C shape. I also had this problem and it really flattens the form, removing the illusion of being a round blob. Think about the curves as still being part of an ellipse as that is what it is. Exaggerate your contours and your forms will be very round and appear to have lots of volume!

Insect Drawings:

Good work on these. While I do not have your refernces in front of me, I can see that you made construction and committed to the construction that you put down. That is the important part and you accomplished that. I can also see that the contour wrap around the forms more than in the organic forms. I can also see contours in places like the eyes, and its clear to me that you were thinking in a 3-d way, so awesome job with that! One critique I do have is on the last picture with the spider and its cast shadow. The cast shadow should also have shadows coming from the other legs, not just the front legs. I think you definitely are ready to move on to the next lesson.

Next Steps:

Keep Drawing and having fun!

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
