Congratulations on finishing lesson 1 :)

Lines

  • Superimposed Lines: On the first page in the upper left corner the lines look a little bit arched, but all other lines look good to me.

  • Ghosted Lines: looks very good.

  • Ghosted Panes: looks very good, there are some very straight lines!

Ellipses

  • Tables of ellipses: You payed very good attention on following exactly the path your arm took the first way around. But try to make sure the ellipses are really snug together and there are no gaps in between (like on second page). Most of your ellipses do that, but some of them are a bit to spaced.

  • Ellipses in planes: look good.

  • Funnels: look very good. Only thing I would point out is the funnel on the right bottom, the arches are a bit flat. This results in very uniform ellipses, but they should increase in size on the sides of the funnel. The one funnel on the left bottom looks great to me!

Boxes

  • Plotted perspective: Good work on plotted perspective! If you feel like it you can try to add some extra weight to the outer lines of the actual box by going over them with an additional pass, but leave the internal lines. But as I understood from the guidelines it is completely optional, the hatching works too!

  • Rough perspective: Looks good.

  • Rotated boxes: This looks so good, great job! :D

  • Organic perspective: Also looks good. Consider adding weight to the organic line as it approaches the viewer to enhance the illusion of depth.

Hope the things I pointed out help you going further :)

Next Steps:

Well done! In my opinion you are ready for the 250 box challenge.

Also consider critiquing other people's submissions for lesson 1. Consult Elowid's guide on Lesson 1 critiques if you're not sure where to start.

Good luck on your art journey and have fun!

Hi!

Seems like a super solid work to me. Tho:

  • your table of ellipse could use a bit more grinding: your ellipses are always far away from the borders or from each other.

Maybe you should keep this exercise as a regural warmup to improve over time without wasting time redoing it.

Your lines are precise and confident! Your rotating box is neat, your organic perspective works well too.

I think you can't learn more from those exercices, so you should consider moving to the 250 boxes challenge.

Good luck!

Next Steps:

The 250 boxes are waiting for you! Just try to keep in mind to warm up doing ellipses (Table of ellipses e.g.) to improve your ellipse skill.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
