I have finally completed Lesson 2 of DAB. The arrows were kind of hard. Some of the pictures were mirrored so the writing is not understandable.

Hurray Introvert! you did a splendid job on completing the lesson 2. Keep up the good work.

Alright lets roll the Intro:

Hey Introvert Its chiran and I decided to look over your assignment and offer my Insights on it.This is my second Critique on lesson 2. Kind of excited and also nervous but I will try to be best and helpful as possible. So without any further Ado Lets start Exploring In;

A- The praises ( the job you did well in the particular exercise)

B- Where It went slightly off( where you should keep an eye on)

C- What you can do or remember to improve on in future warm ups

please allow me to draw over on some of your exercises. because I feel like It will be better to show than say.

Staring for the ORGANIC ARROWS:

A- Your arrows are flowing smoothly and confidently and they feel like they are exploring the depth of the scene so good job on that. I can say that you are using the ghosting technique to produce those results.

B- Here is my little correction on it : first page- https://imgur.com/p0EAe2a. B- Some of the reasons of why we feel our arrows are not convincing-first thing Is we fell into the trap of not thinking about Arrows which flows through the vast 3d instead of across the page. Even hatching lines and line weight can also contradict the lie we are selling.I think you have little bit of trouble with hatching the overlapping sides. Here is my correction The blue lines are correctly hatched. So its normal at this stage but you should be mindful of it next time

Sometimes the perspective of your arrows are slightly off. Like the space between the successive folds compress less when it reach towards the viewer instead of getting bigger and bigger.

https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/0f7c806c.jpg

and also don’t be afraid to overlap your second curve.

C- Second page -https://imgur.com/nFplfpn. (I think Its better to avoid those Spiral arrows and just focus on simple S curves .later after you are much more confident in creating a simple arrows that flows through 3d space, you can Experiment and have fun with them. )

Yes It’s a lot difficult to do than saying- so we advise you to build the second similar curve in part by part or you can plot some points along the path of second curve and ghost several times and execute to your best. Always remember as the arrows appear closure to the viewer their space and thickness increases more and more like shown in this Image: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/011d064f.jpg.

Last but not the least – finally we have to purchase and believe in our own lie which we are telling o the viewer. We should always start to think these pages are not 2d plat piece but they are windows to alarge 3d space. It will not make any sense now but after building some mileage with them you will start to think about them in 3 dimensions ( length, breadth and height)

Here is my Attempt on Spiral arrows-https://imgur.com/uG9bqHG

Jumping To ORGANIC FORMS:

A-I think you are not fallen into the category of complicating your Forms so good job on keeping your organic forms simple ( The characteristics of simple organic form is like – there will be Two identical balls which are connected by a tube which can be manipulated in any ways).

I appreciate that the Ellipses are drawn with concrete or real goal in mind meaning - taking time to plan where your ellipses sit before executing and striving to keep them within the Bounds ,Aligning to spine of form and increasing their degrees as they travel through the form so thats good.!

The ellipses are smooth and are drawn 2-3 times so that’s great!

B- Sometimes your forms get a little bit complex like the balls are squished( like they form sharp curve at the ends) instead of being identical ( we can see on organic forms page 2) so yes try to think them as a identical ball connected by a tube of constant width.

Another Issue I noticed in the oraganic forms with contour curves is that sometimes the degrees of the curves remain constant as we move along the form.so yeah try to make a conscious effort to change the degree of contour lines while sliding along the form

C-Yes You should try your best to hook the contour lines around the organic forms, while also aligning to the minor axis and also be mindful of their degree shift ( cuz in your work there is not much degree shift in contour lines). My little suggestion is to Experiment and have fun with them in your warm ups. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/368871002584907776/867744968432549928/QTEqgJa_1.png

One another thing to mention here is that In your organic forms with contour ellipses- the starting small ellipse which is used as a cue on which side is facing to the viewer has the same degree throughout the page. So be aware of its degree also. Its degree will also change corresponding to orientation of the forms. https://discord.com/channels/365036548820959242/368871002584907776/882843680275308574

Moving on to THE TEXTURE ANALYSIS EXERCISE:

A-Your texture analysis is awesome mate!.good job On focusing mainly on the cast shadows. I can say you did a good job on conveying your textural information to the viewer in the form of Gradients from densely packed to sparse so this will help our viewers eye to move freely( its is called working Implicitly) .

C- Only reminder here-I would like to show this Image https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png

In this Image It explains why we have to focus mainly on shapes rather than outlines or simple lines. So by focusing mainly on shapes we can create and interesting and more dynamic textural info rather than simple lines.

THE DISSECTIONS:

A-Nice work here also you did a good job on wrapping your textures around the form. But some of it still needs some Improvement there

B- This issue is present in a little, but still I’ll mention It. (There are minor times where you are not taking the chance to break the basic silhouette of the organic forms .You have a great opportunity to convey your textural info,so we advise you to take that opportunity and break your basic silhouette because this is the first info where our eyes will draw.

Jumping to FORM INTERSECTION:

A-What are the good jobs here? – Well You did a great job in keeping your forms Coherant, cohesive and resembling that they share the same scene( shallow foreshortening)

The forms are drawn through so good job on that too!

Splendid work on you Intersections

C- One thing to Remind here about the line work is – we advise students to take Their time to plan and ghost the lines ( this can also applies to hatching lines as well). then execute them with your shoulder confidently. Even while adding line weight and hatching lines you should ghost and draw them confidently. Its just a reminder.

There is some minor hiccups in the Intersections. Since its not much the focus of the exercise I can say that you are on the right track. Use Our community support member ( Optimus) First Aid pack on Intersection. It’s a wonderful guide for all of us.

moving on the last Exercise:

A-The Organic Intersection is done very well. Again good job on keeping your forms simple. I can say that you are thinking about them as water balloons which have mass and volume to them

B- In a very minor Times your forms feels a little bit rigid. So yeah continue to think about them as a water balloon that can sag and bend when it dropped on the other similar form.

Now coming to Important point :

Of course you had done great job on putting lots of focus, energy and time in completing this lesson so hats off for that. but there are things I feel like that you need to improve on them some more. I just want to bring you to the right path so Unfortunately I'm asking for a revision of only one page.

THE REVISION: WHAT ARE THE REVISION?

ONE PAGE OF ARROWS. thats all

HOW TO TACKLE THE REVISION?

Keep in mind the Above mentioned points over there and work towards that goal. Try your best as you can but don't expect perfectionism!

Here are some of the useful links:

Arrows: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/organicarrows

Focus on executing smooth, confident lines from the shoulder.

you can go over the lecture content and video to get better understanding of purpose of exercise)

The point of this revision is not to expect some wonderful works but instead its just to remind you what you should be focus on while working toward these exercises.

understand the materials at your own pace and execute to your best. overall only 1 page I'm asking for. so I believe that you will take my feed back to the heart and work with it.

I'm awaiting to your response. have a nice day!

Thank you INTROVERT!

Next Steps:

THE REVISION:

One page filled with ARROWS.

Having any questions related to this feed back. Feel freee to ask in the reply section or ping me in the draw a box discord server.

THANK YOU!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Excellento! keep up the good work Introvert.

I just Compared your revision with the Earlier submission. now the arrows looks much better and smooth.

you did draw them by keeping in the mind the perspective and the depth of the Space so good job on it. I can say that you are definitely on the right path. I'm really Impressed by your progress. so yeah I'm allowing you to move on to lesson 3 by marking your lesson as Complete.

Yay! we made It. Congratulations on Completing the lesson 2. I hope this feedbacks helps. Have a wonderful Artistic Journey Ahead. I'm awaiting to see your progress throughout

Thank you INTROVERT!.

Next Steps:

WHAT NEXT?

  1. feel free to move on to lesson 3

2.set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes- know your goal , be conscious of your mistakes and fight for 10 or 15 minutes in warm ups. be as perfect as you can but don't expect perfection!.

Thank you!

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 3 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Thank you Chiran. I'll try my best.

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
