Congratulations on completing lesson 1!

I can see you put a lot of effort into completing your homework to the best of your ability. When I look at your lines homework, particularly the super-imposed lines and ghosted lines, I can see that you do a good job of making rich dark marks and that you are trying to be careful and accurate. I can also see a good amount of hesitation and wobbling in many of your lines here. One thing I recommend is reading this response writtend by Uncomfortable where he talks about the ghosting method and hesitation in mark making. I will add that you do appear to improve on the wobbling and hesitation in your planes homework but it is still present throughout your lesson homework as a whole.

In your tables of ellipses homework you appear to have not drawn through many of your ellipses correctly. Drawing through your ellipses is a very important step and you can read more about why that is here. If you are every struggling with the lessons, your first step should be to consult the instructions as they will tell you what your next step is. I recommend for your future warm ups that you stick to drawing through your ellipses twice so that you can better focus on employing the ghosting method correctly. In your ellipses in planes homework your ellipses have a bit less wobble and are beginning to look more like the round, confidently shaped ellipses we look for in Drawabox. Your funnels also show some signs of improvement and I can see that you are being careful in where you place them. If you keep in mind what I've mentioned here and read the response I linked, you should begin to see improvement in your ellipses over time.

With your rough perspective homework you placed your boxes fairly well. Your horizontal lines stay largely parallel to the horizon and your vertical lines are fairly perpendicular. You also did a pretty good job of getting your boxes to converge near or on your plotted vanishing points. Your line quality goes down a bit here, especially when compared to your planes homework. Keep in mind as you progress through Drawabox and begin to construct more complex forms that it is important to put in the time and focus required to execute each line correctly and to apply the ghosting method to every step of the process, as explained here.

The rotated boxes exercise is a challenging and complex exercise. I can see that you struggled with this exercise and thats okay. Like I said, it's challenging. You did do a pretty good job of trying to construct your boxes with cleaner, more consistent lines. The main thing that I see here is that your boxes are not really rotating much along the major axes. You can read more about that here. Don't forget what I said before about referring the instructions frequently and remember, you can always ask questions in the community or on the Drawabox discord if you are really struggling.

Finally for your organic perspective boxes I can see you were more careful with your construction and there is less hesitation overall in your mark making, which is good to see! You did a pretty good job of trying to get your sets of lines to converge more consistently towards their shared vanishing points. That is something you will work on more in the next steps.

Next Steps:

I would like you to do one page of ellipses in planes before moving on to the 250 Box Challenge. Be sure to read all the links I gave you before starting. What I am looking for in your revisions is less hesitation in your mark making overall. That means making clean, consistent, confident lines drawn from the shoulder using the ghosted method. Not just the lines that make up your planes but your ellipses as well. Take your time and give each step as much care as you need to execute each mark you make to the best of your current ability.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to look over my work, I appreciate your feedback.

I have uploaded a page of the Elipses in planes assignment to Imgur -

This is a very good improvement!

Your planes are better constructed with your lines looking much more confident overall than before. There is still some hesitation in your ellipses but it is less than before. I recommend that you continue to incorporate this exercise into your warm ups so that you can continue to improve.

Other than that you are free to move onto the 250 Box Challenge.

Next Steps:

Continue to the 250 Box Challenge!

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thank you for guiding me with this, I'm looking forward to starting on the boxes challenge tomorrow!

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
