Hi Bayne I'll be handling the critique for your box challenge.

-First of all I want to make a suggestion, I can see that you are working in a sketchbook, this isn't recommended although it is not prohibited either, what you want to keep in mind is that you want to draw with as few distractions as possible, when working in a sketchbook you have to worry about the spiral which sometimes hinders your ability to draw your marks or ghost your lines.

-I can see that you have some problems when adding lineweight, your initial boxes lacked a lot of accuracy when it came to adding it on the edges, I can definitely see you improved throughout the challenge, but you can still work on it, remeber to keep the applications subtle one additional line is more than enough.

-When adding the hatching lines, you are doing great, remember that you also have to ghost them, but for the most part they seem consistent.

  • I can notice that you drew some x marking the places where you wanted your lines to pass trough, this is something that can help you but at the same time it may not, when you have marked this places you stick strictly to them, adjusting your boxes to fit and be consistent with these marks, but there's no real way of knowing for certin if this marks are correct.

  • In some pages I see you try to fit some small boxes but remember that you want to draw your boxes of a considerable size, this makes it easier for you to draw from your shoulder.

  • Now on to the extended lines, one problems that shows up consistently throughout your work is that your lines converge in pairs, you can see it exemplified here.

-The key things we want to remember from this exercise are that our lines should always converge as a set not in pairs, never diverge from the vanishing point and due to perspective they won't be completely parallel.

Overall while you did make a few mistakes your boxes are improving so far and with more mileage you'll continue to become more consistent. That being said I'll be marking your submission as complete and moving you on to lesson 2.

Hey Solo,

The ring on my sketchbook really was a distraction - I just had those laying around and wanted to use them up. Going forward I will draw on loose pages.

Line weight was really frustrating me, I will keep practicing that specifically.

Regarding the X it was just a way to mark lines that were way off the imagined vanishing point while checking my line extensions. Maybe I was a bit too critical at some points.

Good point on pairing lines, I will try to avoid this going forward.

Thank you for taking the time and looking over my boxes, much obliged!

Cottonwood Arts Sketchbooks

These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
